Assignment Z Test

This document contains 8 questions from a business statistics assignment dealing with hypothesis testing using z-tests. The questions provide sample data on topics like student test scores, IQ scores, production quantities, and supplier part quality and ask students to perform z-tests to determine if null hypotheses can be rejected. Correct answers are provided for each question analyzing z-scores and deciding whether to reject or fail to reject null hypotheses at given significance levels.

ASSIGNMENT

Q1 The marks obtained by students at a large number of universities are known to be normally distributed
with a mean of 25 . A random sample of 36 students showed an average number of marks of 27 with a
S.D of 5.What conclusion should be drawn?

Ans : Z=2.4 ,reject Ho

Q2 A random sample of size 36 is taken from a normal population with a known variance =25.If the mean
of the sample is =42.6, test the null hypothesis µ=45 against the alternative hypothesis µ<45 with α=0.05.

Ans : Z= -2.88 , reject Ho

Q3 The IQ’s of the students are known to be normally distributed with a mean of 123. A random sample
of 49 students showed an average IQ’s of 120.67 and S=8.44. Test the hypothesis that µ=123 against the
alternative that it is less . Let α=0.05

Ans: Z= -1.93 , reject Ho

QQ4 Suppose that the mean of a random variable is unknown but the variance is known to be 144.Should
we reject the null hypothesis in favour of an alternative hypothesis µ not equal to 15 at α=0.05 , if a
random sample of 64 observations yields a mean=12?

Ans: Z= -2 , reject Ho

Q5 A process is in control when the average amount of instant coffee that is packed in a jar , is 6 oz.The
S.D is 0.2 oz .A sample of 100 jars is selected at random and the sample average is found to be 6.1 oz . Is
the process out of control?

Ans: Z=5 , reject Ho

Q6 A sample of size 6 from a normal population with variance 24 gave (x1-bar)=15.A sample of size 8
from a normal population with variance 80 gave x2-bar=13.Test µ1-µ2=0 against not equal to 0.Let
α=0.05.

Ans: Z= 0.53, accept Ho

Q7 The two samples A and B from normal population of S.D=2.5 .Decide whether the difference of
sample means is significant at the 0.05α.
A 16 18 23 26 19 24 25 23 21 22
B 20 21 23 25 25 27 24 26 24 28
Ans: Z = -2.33 reject Ho

Q8 A manufacturer suspects a difference in the quality of the spare parts he receives from two
suppliers.He obtains following data

Suppliers Number in sample Means SD

A 50 150 10

B 100 153 5
Test whether the difference between two sample means is statistically significant at 1% level of
significance.

Ans: Z = -2 accept Ho
