1.) What causes a balloon to be drawn towards/stick to a sweater? What causes your hair to stand
as you bring a charged balloon towards it?
-The balloon and the sweater/hair have opposite charges
2.) Describe the charges of the pictures below:

The objects are attracted to each The objects are repelling each other
Other (opposite charge) (same charge)
3.) Fill in the blanks for the following sentence: Materials with opposite charges are attracted to
each other while materials with the same charge are repelled from each other.
4.) After walking across the carpet to open your bedroom door you feel a shock on your hand.
What caused the shock?

-Discharge of electricity from your hand

5.) What is friction? Provide an example

-At item becoming charged by rubbing against another item. Ex: Clothes sticking together in dryer,
rubbing your feet against the carpet/rug

6.) What is conduction? Provide an example

-An item becoming charged through direct contact. Ex:

7.) What is induction? Provide an example

-An item charging through indirect contact. Ex: Rubbing a balloon against your leg then holding it
near your hair and your hair sticks up

8.) How does an electroscope work?

9.) What is a conductor?

-Allows electrons to move more easily

10.) What is an insulator?

-Does NOT allow electrons to move easily

11.) An object is magnetized when its domains are aligned.

12.) If the poles of two magnets are attracted to each other what can you infer?
