The Bacchus Marsh Magistrates court heard on Friday 6
December that 20-year-old Marcus McConnell was travelling

Aiming to keep
‘unity in community’
Spa bubbles cease
Following a thorough review of usage versus cost
in the Primary Care Centre, BDH&C made the
decision to permanently close the spa.
Ms Clift (Acting-CEO) said over a period of several
months, the number of pool and spa users has been
reviewed.
“The number of people visiting our Centre to use
the spa is minimal, in contrast to the high running
costs and amount of regular maintenance required.
“Closing the spa will allow us to focus on the
hydrotherapy pool, which is used much more
regularly and is beneficial for clinical rehabilitation,”
Ms Clift said.
“We understand the spa closure may be
disappointing for some however our primary aim is
to ensure that the most essential health services are

A new GP for Ballan District Health & Care

– welcome, Dr Rutherfurd!
Ballan District Health & Care extends a warm welcome to Dr Sonya Rutherfurd, who
has recently joined our GP Clinic team at 164 Inglis Street, Ballan.
Dr Sonya Rutherfurd studied medicine at the University of Melbourne over 30 years
ago and has held a wide variety of medicine-related roles, including working as a
surgical assistant in private hospital operating theatres for 13 years, working in the
Box Hill Hospital Emergency Department for seven years (a role she still performs),
and spending a year working in the area of youth mental health at headspace.
When Dr Rutherfurd decided she’d like to practice rural medicine, she got in touch
with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) to investigate
her options. Her first role was based at Croydon Medical Centre and it was here
that she met Rick Lowan, who encouraged her to look into a GP opportunity with
Ballan District Health & Care.
Dr Rutherfurd enjoys the variety of care that General Practice involves and has a
keen interest in preventative medicine. Other areas of interest include nutrition
and mental health care. She is very much looking forward to working with the team
at BDHC and meeting many members of the Ballan community.
Dr Rutherfurd has a Bachelor of Nutritional Science from Monash University and is a
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the field of Neuroscience (University of Melbourne).
Outside of work, Dr Rutherfurd loves her pet budgie, and enjoys tap dancing and
testing recipes for her website https://www.pictureofhealthrecipes.com/

Giving art a voice

Indigenous art and culture were at the forefront for Bacchus
Marsh Grammar VCE Art students last month.
‘Carjacked Culture’, a collaboration with Bacchus Marsh
Grammar and Deakin University, explored the appropriation of
Indigenous language and culture through design.
Students were required to create a visual artwork that made a
statement on the appropriation of Indigenous culture, with the
aim to enhance awareness of the use of Indigenous iconography,
language and artwork.
As part of the program, students heard from Deakin
University staff on the history of appropriation from Indigenous
communities and researched with the aid of local Aboriginal
Elder Joanne Layton and school artist-in-residence Lou Callow.
Project facilitator Sarah Hunter said the program “was an
exciting and challenging learning experience for our students.”
“It allowed them to explore the issues of appropriation within
the design field, whilst also exploring their understanding of
other injustices experienced by Indigenous populations around
the world,” she said.
“Their artworks were insightful commentaries of their learning
through this project and we are all incredibly proud of what
these students have achieved.”
The artworks will be exhibited online and formally exhibited at
