Open Ended Project Power Electronics PDF

This document outlines an open-ended lab project for an Electrical Engineering course on Power Electronics. Students will work in groups of up to three people to design and implement a DC-DC converter. The converter must convert a 12V DC input to a variable 0-12V DC output and support a maximum current of 5A. Students have 5 weeks to complete calculations, simulations, programming, circuit design, PCB implementation, and a final presentation. The project aims to familiarize students with DC-DC converters and involve hands-on hardware implementation. Marks will be given for the hardware, presentation, and a written report.

Course: EE-405 Power Electronics Semester: 6th (2016)

Instructors: Shahid Latif, Fareeha Saeed Class: A, B, C, D

Open Ended Lab Project

Design and Implementation of DC to DC converter
Design and Implementation of DC to DC converter

Marks Distribution:
Hardware Implementation = 50%
Project Presentation / Viva = 40%
Project report = 10%

Objective:
a) Purpose of the project is to familiarize the students with DC-DC Converters.
b) Hardware Implementation of a DC-DC converter

Note:
Project has to be done in Groups. Each group can have maximum of three students.

Project Details:
In many industrial applications, it is required to convert a fixed voltage DC source into a
variable voltage DC source. A DC-DC converter converts directly from DC to DC.

Specifications
• Input Voltage = 12V
• Output Voltage = 0V to 12V (Linear)
• Maximum Current = 5A
• Switching Frequency = Optimum, considering filter design

Block diagram of the system

Design Requirements
• Detailed theoretical calculations for converter design.
• Hardware (Implemented on PCB or Vero Board).
• Display Unit (Use 16 x 2 LCD to display duty cycle and output voltage).
• Test load will be 12V Bulb (You can use motorcycle’s indicator bulb).

Estimated Time Frame:

Week 1 Designing calculations and basic architecture design

Week 2 Simulations with analog systems
Week 3 Write program for microcontroller
Week 4 Design PCB and implement circuit
Week 5 Project Presentation / Viva

Note:
Project, Viva, Presentation & Report (or any other assessment tool as decided by the
instructor) would be marked as per defined Rubrics.
