Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Use in the Philippine Public and
Private Schools
The Philippines is one of many developing nations that have turned to information and
communication technology (ICT) as a tool to improve teaching and learning. In this digital era,
ICT integration in the school is important for giving students opportunities to learn and apply the
required 21st century skills. The government is addressing _______ technology gaps among
teachers and students to continually enhance the quality of education in the Philippines.
In the previous school I was assigned then, the school was informed to receive computer
and network equipment. Unfortunately, the school didn’t have room that could accommodate the
machines for it direly lacked classrooms due to over population of students. Half of the library
room was used then but without air conditioning.
Students are all digital natives – fluent “speakers” of the digital language of computers,
video games, and the internet, while teachers are digital immigrants who were not born into the
digital world but have adopted many aspects of the new technology. Teachers are adapting to
technological advances in education to allow maximum learning with the use of modern
gadgets. We can never deny the fact that some don’t have enough capacity and appreciation of
the benefits of ICT through proper resource management.
Filipinos can compete globally in terms of skills in ICT. In DepEd, they are now
introducing the benefits of ICT in classes. Learners from their early years can operate simple
computer operations. This is because our government wants to produce a highly competitive
product of learners especially in this present time. ICT equipment and other devices are now
available in every public elementary and secondary schools but it can’t be denied that despite of
the availability of these equipment, it cannot be fully utilized by the learners and teachers
because of the lack of enough resources to avail the internet signal or there are some regions or
provinces here in our country that still has no network signals (cellular and internet).
Today, our government is doing its best. They are now calling the ICT providers to stress
the importance of strategic external partnerships from them. rdable and accessible to more
Filipinos. The Private sector, conversely, is clamoring for the government to improve information
security, enact better laws, and update infrastructure. And I believe that our government today is
doing their very best in this matter because it will benefit the entire country for new investments
from other countries will surely come. Government offices nowadays uses Information systems
to facilitate easy and smooth operations, fast release of documents, effective database, and
other related ICT benefits.
There is uncertainty whether computers in schools are being fully utilized for educational
computing. The students do also hesitate to use it especially those who are marginalized and
poor who couldn’t afford for repair.
