Course Instructor: Dr Farhan Mahmood
Teaching Assistant: Muhammad Furqan Hameed

Deadline: December 5, 2019

Instructions:

 Late submissions will not be accepted.

 Use A4 Sheets for Your Assignment. Clearly state Name and registration number.
 NOT PLAGIARIZE. Plagiarism includes:
o Copying solutions from the internet
o Copying from the solution manual
o Copying among classmates.
 Use Conductor table where needed uploaded on piazza.

Problem 1: 15 Marks
A three-phase, 60-Hz, completely transposed 345-kV, 200-km line has two 795,000-cmil 26/2 ACSR
conductors per bundle and the following positive sequence line constants:
z = 0.032 + j0.35 ohm/km
y = j4.2 x 10-6 S/km
Full load at the receiving end of the line is 700 MW at 0.99 p.f leading and at 95% of rated voltage.
Assuming a medium-length line, determine the following:
a. ABCD parameters of the nominal p circuit
b. Sending-end voltage VS, current IS, and real power PS
c. Percent voltage regulation
d. Thermal limit, based on the approximate current-carrying capacity
listed in Table A.4
e. Transmission-line % efficiency at full load.

Problem 2: 10 Marks
A three-phase 765-kV, 60-Hz, 300-km, completely transposed line has the following positive-
sequence impedance and admittance:
z = 0.0165 + j0.3306 ohm/km
y = j4.674 x 10-6 S/km
Assuming positive-sequence operation, calculate the exact ABCD parameters of the line. Compare the
exact B parameter with that of the nominal p circuit.

Problem 3: 5 Marks
Neglecting line losses, find the theoretical steady-state stability limit for the300-km line. Assume a
266.1-ohm surge impedance, a 5000-km wavelength, and VS = VR = 765 kV.

Problem 4: 10 Marks
The 300-km uncompensated line in Example 5.2 has four 1,272,000-cmil 54/3 ACSR conductors per
bundle. The sending-end voltage is held constant at 1.0 per-unit of rated line voltage. Determine the
following:
A. The practical line loadability. (Assume an approximate receiving-end voltage VR = 0:95 per unit
and δ = 350 maximum angle across the line.)
b. The full-load current at 0.986 p.f. leading based on the above practical line loadability
c. The exact receiving-end voltage for the full-load current found in part (b)
d. Percent voltage regulation for the above full-load current.

Problem 5: 10 Marks
The ABCD constants of a three-phase transmission line are
A = D = 0.936 + j0. 0 1 6
B = 33.5 + j 13 ohm
C = (-5.18 + j 914) x 1 0-6 S
The load at the receiving end is 50MW at 220 kV with a power factor of 0.9 lagging. Find the
magnitude of the sending-end voltage and the voltage regulation.
Assume that the magnitude of the sending end voltage remains constant.

Problem 6: 10 Marks
A 60-Hz three-phase transmission line is 175 mi l ong. I t has a total series impedance of
35 + j140 ohm and a shunt admittance of 930x10-6 arg 900 S. It delivers 40 MW at 220 kV, with 90%
power-factor lagging. Find the voltage at the:
sending end Voltage by (a) the short-line approximation, (b) the nominal-pi approximation,
and (c) the long-line equation.

Problem 7: 10 Marks
A 400-km, 500-kV, 60-Hz uncompensated three-phase line has a positive-sequence series impedance
z = 0.03 + j0.35 ohm/km and a positive-sequence shunt admittance y=j4.4 + 10-6 S/km. Calculate: (a)
Zc, (b) (ƴ l) and (c) the exact ABCD parameters for this line.

Problem 8: 10 Marks

At full load the line in Problem 5.14 delivers 1000 MW at unity power factor and at 475 kV.
Calculate: (a) the sending-end voltage
(b) the sending-end current,
(c) the sending-end power factor
(d) the full-load line losses, and
(e) the percent voltage regulation.

Problem 9: 10 Marks
A three phase transmission line has a per phase series impedance of z = 0.03 +j0.4 ohm/km, and shunt
admittance y=j4.0x10-6 S/Km. The line is 125km. Obtain ABCD parameter for this, Determine
Receiving end quantities, voltage regulation and line efficiency when the line is sending 407MW,
7.833VAR at 350KV.

Problem 10: 10 Marks

The sending end and receiving ends are to be end constant at 500KV when line supplies a load of
70MBA @ 0.75 p.f lagging. Calculate the reactive VARs to be supplied by compensating the
equipment.
