Experiment 2

This document outlines an experiment to determine the boiling point of pure water. The aim is to measure the boiling point, with the hypothesis being it is 100°C. Students are instructed to heat 300ml of water in a beaker using a Bunsen burner and thermometer to observe when it boils and record the temperature. After conducting the experiment, students will answer discussion questions about why the thermometer tip shouldn't touch the beaker, whether tap water is pure, how impurities affect boiling point, and changes to water's molecular properties during boiling. The conclusion is expected to be that the boiling point of pure water is 100°C.

CHEMISTRY GRADE 6
EXPERIMENT 2 : (605) SEPARATION METHOD FOR MIXTURES

Teachers Guide
Teacher is required to follow the procedures below and practice good lab safety skills.
Ensure that :
a. The working tables are clean of dirt and impurities
b. Students are wearing proper lab attires (covered shoes, gloves, lab coat goggles and etc.)
c. Students clean the working table after the experiment
Aim of experiment : To determine the suitable separation method for different kind of mixtures.
Problem statement : What is the exact boiling point of pure water ?
Hypothesis : The boiling point of water is 100°C/212 F at 1 atmospheric pressure.
Apparatus & Materials : 1000ml beaker, tripod stand, wire gauze, Bunsen burner, glass
thermometer, 300ml water.
Procedure :
1. Set up the apparatus as shown below.
2. Pour 300ml of water into the beaker.
3. Dip in thermometer.
4. Light up the Bunsen burner and put in medium blue flame.
5. Observe the change in temperature and record the temperature when the water boils
completely.
6. Teacher is required to explain the heating curve as well.

Discussion

1. Why the tip of the thermometer should not be touched?

2. Is tap water a pure water? Why?
3. What happens when some impurities are added into pure water?
4. Explain briefly what happens during the stage of boiling of water. Discuss the changes in
the molecular properties of the water.

Conclusion : Boiling point of pure water is 100°C.
