Experiment 2
CHEMISTRY GRADE 6
EXPERIMENT 2 : (605) SEPARATION METHOD FOR MIXTURES
Teachers Guide
Teacher is required to follow the procedures below and practice good lab safety skills.
Ensure that :
a. The working tables are clean of dirt and impurities
b. Students are wearing proper lab attires (covered shoes, gloves, lab coat goggles and etc.)
c. Students clean the working table after the experiment
Aim of experiment : To determine the suitable separation method for different kind of mixtures.
Problem statement : What is the exact boiling point of pure water ?
Hypothesis : The boiling point of water is 100°C/212 F at 1 atmospheric pressure.
Apparatus & Materials : 1000ml beaker, tripod stand, wire gauze, Bunsen burner, glass
thermometer, 300ml water.
Procedure :
1. Set up the apparatus as shown below.
2. Pour 300ml of water into the beaker.
3. Dip in thermometer.
4. Light up the Bunsen burner and put in medium blue flame.
5. Observe the change in temperature and record the temperature when the water boils
completely.
6. Teacher is required to explain the heating curve as well.
Aim :
Hypothesis :
Procedure :
Discussion :
1. Why the tip of the thermometer should not be touched?
3. What happens when some impurities are added into pure water?
Conclusion :
