Tutorial Sheet-4 (Truss) AM11101

1. The document provides tutorial problems for the analysis of truss structures using various methods. It includes 12 problems involving plane trusses with given member connections, applied forces, and requested force determinations in various members. 2. Four common methods for truss analysis are discussed: the method of joints, method of sections, tension coefficient method, and graphical method. 3. Key steps are outlined for determining external, internal and total indeterminacy of trusses. Zero-force members are also defined.

Tutorial Sheet-4 (Truss): Engineering Mechanics (AM-11101)
B.Tech (1st Semester) Session 2019-20
Note: Follow the names used for the joints / members exactly, as given for a problem. Enlist the relevant
force values of the individual members, after solving each of the problems.

1. (A) Explain the following, with suitable examples. (i) Plane and space truss (ii) A simple truss (iii)
External, internal and total indeterminacy (redundancy) (iv) Zero-force member.
(B) Determine the External, internal and the total indeterminacy for the trusses shown in Fig.-3 and
Fig.-8.
2. If the joints of the truss structures in all the figures in this sheet were fixed / rigid joints, instead of being
hinged joints, what the structures would have been called, instead of being called a truss?
3. Explain the Method of Joint and the Method of Section for analysis of trusses. What are the important
criteria for choosing the joints / sections, when using these methods of analysis of trusses.
4. (A) Explain the Tension Coefficient Method and the Graphical method for analysis of trusses. How
are these two methods related to the Method of Joint ?
(B) Discuss on the relative advantages / disadvantages (if any) of these four different methods of truss
analysis, in a Tabular form.
5. Identify without calculations, the zero-force members, if any, in the truss shown in Figure-1. Then,
calculate the support reactions and the forces that would be induced in other members of the truss, using
the method of joint.
6. Solve for the member forces for the truss shown in Figure-2, using the method of joint and the method
of section. Check whether the same values are obtained from these two methods.
7. Solve for the member forces for the trusses shown in Figures 4-5, using any method of your choice.
8. Determine the support reactions and the member forces in the truss shown in Figure-6, assuming the
pulley to be weightless and frictionless and having a diameter of 0.2 m. The load of 150 KN is held by a
rope with tensile force T inclined at an angle of 30 with the horizontal.
9. Determine the member forces for the truss shown in Figure-7, using the graphical method and the
method of tension coefficients. Compare the values obtained from these two methods. Use graph papers
for the graphical method.
10. Determine the force in the member BF of the truss shown in Figure-8, using only one free body diagram
and one equation of equilibrium. Can you predict the member force in member CE, without calculation?
11. Analyze the truss structure shown in Figure-9, by the any method of your choice.
12. Analyze the truss structure shown in Figure-10, by any method of your choice.
