Design of High Strength Concrete using de‘Larrad Method

Derive the batch quantities for 1 m3 of concrete with a design strength of 90

MPa using 10% replacement of cement by silica fume (sf) and crushed
basalt aggregate.
For Basalt Aggregate KgRC = 320 MPa
Paste = cement + water + superplasticiser
Volume of paste per cubic metre of concrete is given by :

𝐶 𝑠 (𝑤⁄𝑐 )
+ + c + Su = 0.33 m3 ……..…… Equation 1
𝐶 𝑆 𝑊

where :
C : weight of cement

S : weight of silica fume

c : specific gravity of cement 3.15

sf : specific gravity of silica fume2.2

w : Specific gravity of water

Su : Superplasticiser

By Using de’Larrad formula, determine w/c.

Formula of de’Larrad is as follows (Equation 2) :

1
𝐾𝑔.𝑅𝐶
f’ ‘ c = 𝑊 …………… Equation 2
3.1 ( 𝐶 )
⌈1+ 𝑠 ⌉2
1.4−0.4 exp(−11𝑐)

where :
f’ ‘ c = mean (targeted strength)
w/c = 0.32
Then, from Equation 1, determine cement (c ), silica fume (sf) and water
(w) content. Given Su (superplasticiser) is 1.6 Litre for every 100 kg of
cement.
C = 469 kg/m3
sf = 52 kg/m3
water (w) = 150 kg/m3
Superplasticer = 1.6 x 469/100 = 7.5 LITRE
Assume , air content 1% of total volume
Total Aggregate (in volume) = 1 - 0.01 - 0.33 = 0.66 m3
Given Fine Aggregate(FA) is 30% of the total aggregate and specific gravity
of both aggregate 2.65
Coarse Aggregate = 0.70 x 0.66 x 2,650 = 1224 kg/m3
Fine Aggregate = 0.30 x 0.66 x 2,650 = 525 kg/m3
Hence, batch quantities in kg/m3
in Cement Silica Water Fine Coarse Superplasticiser
kg/m3 fume Agg Agg
469 52 150 525 1224 7.5 Litre

Exercise :
Derive the batch quantities to produce 110 MPa strength of
concrete using de’Larrad method incorporating 5% silica fume
and 25% fly ash. The concrete is also required to possess high
resistance to vibration characteristic.

Given KgRC = 300 MPa

Fine aggregate content is 35% of the total aggregate content
Volume paste = 0.35 m3
S.G for cement = 3.15
S.G for silica fume = 2.2
S.G for aggregate = 2.7
Su = 1.4 Liter for every 100 kg
