The document discusses the key components of urban space - blocks, streets, and squares. It describes streets as arteries of circulation, places for social interaction and commerce. Squares are described as intersections of roads that serve as meeting places. The relationships between these components and how they are shaped by factors like building facades, sections, and elevations are examined. Models of urban space and classifications of interior vs. exterior spaces are also presented.

Street as an artery / For Circulation

Urban Design - Unit 1 Ar. Priya Sasidharan MEASI Academy of Architecture

Functions of the Street

1. Artery of circulation – Hierarchy of roads – 7V’s of Chandigarh

2. Social Rituals – Street as a social space, extension of the street as a semi-public space:Thinnai, as a shop, for
festivities, for interaction. Example – Mint / Sowcarpet in Chennai, Dharavi in Mumbai

3. Shopping – Informal activities, vendors and kiosks as small urban spaces with activity, Example – George Town
4. Shopping streets exclusive to either wholesale or retail activity (George Town, Purasawakkam, T.Nagar –
Ranganathan Street) with its supporting sensory and spatial elements as in banners / display, neon lights, awnings
that project onto the street.

5. Travel – The physical dimension of travelling as in movement / circulation from point At o point B is
transcended by the visual or sensory travel. The axiom of kinesthetics (moving throuh space over time / urban
environments and urban spaces are experienced in some form of dynamic, emerging, unfolding, and temporal
sequence, Tiesdell, 2011) and haptic sense are best explained in streets as an urban space. (Chandi Chowk,
Bazaars, Temple – Car Streets)
