1 PERFORMANCE TEST
1.1 GENERAL
Performance test of the fans are conducted as per specification BS 848 Part I 1980 Type 'B'
installation with outlet duct set up
The fan inlet(suction end) is kept open according to above fig .The fitted duct is of minimum 8D
length with a straightener length of 0.45D~ . In test duct resistance screen shall be fitted at the end for
required throttling. The various points of measured readings are obtained by changing the resistance.
This changing is done by putting cross pipes / circular discs.
Standardised air duct indicates two different zones of tappings for measurement of static
pressure, dynamic pressure as per BS 848.To complete one set or reading, speed of fan, power,
temperature of air, baromtric pressure are to be noted.
1.2 Standardised air ways have different components as mentioned below.
(1) Transition piece : It is spaced between rectangular fan discharge to circular
outlet duct. The length and the divergent/convergent angle will be as per BS 848.
(2) Flow straightener : Provided inside the standard test duct to straighten the flow.
The straightener details are as per BS 848.
(3) Discharge throttling: Used to adjust the air flow to a close proximity to the desired
value by means of throttling at discharge end of the duct by putting cross pipes / circular discs.
(4) Location of Measuring points : The centre of the pitot static tube hold manualy, shall
be located successive at not less than 4 measuring points spaced along the diameter
of the airway. The head of the pitot static tube shall be alligned parallel with the airway
duct pointing its head against the air flow .The distance of the
measuring points of the airway shall be within limits given below.

PERFORMANCE TEST
1 0.021D For tolerances, refer BS 848
2 0.117D
3 0.184D
4 0.345D
(5) Conversion rule for test rpm:- Generaly it is not practical to test the
performance of the fan at the rated rpm and density. The following formulae
is used to determine the fan performance at rated speed.
a) Flow rate:-Qs=Qn x (Ns/Nn) Qs : Air volume at specified speed
Qn : Air volume at test speed
Ns : Specified speed
Nn : Test speed
b) Pressure : Ps=Pn x (Ns/Nm)(Ns/Nm) x( Rs/Rt)
Ps : Pressure at specified speed
Pn : Pressure at test speed
Ns : Specified speed
Nm : Test speed
Rs : Density at specified condition
Rt : Density at test condition
c) Shaft Power :- Ss = Sn x (Ns/Nn)3 x (Rs/Rt)
Ss : Shaft power at specified speed
Sn : Shaft power at test speed
Ns : Specified speed
Nm : Test Speed
Rs : Density at specified condition
Rt : Density at test condition
Formulae used : For calculation of performance at test condition and to arrive at
specified condition the formulae used are in accordance with BS 848 Part I 1980.
Test Results :- The calculated test results are tabulated in separate sheet and
plotted in graph paper for (i) Static Pressure Vs Flow Rate (ii) Shaft Power Vs Flow Rate

PERFORMANCE TEST
Test for specified duty should comprise not less than 5 set of readings
determining a short part of the fan characsteristics including the specified
inlet volume and specified pressure point in centre.
1.3 System Resistance curve : The system resistance curve is also drawn
through the specified duty point. The most probable operating point of the fan
will be at the intersection of actual fan characsteristic curve and the system
resistance curve and the difference in between should be regarded as
the measure of departure of the fan performance from the specified
performance.
A typical performance curve and system resistance curve is shown below.

Tolerance includes the allowance of the measured departure from the
specified performance as per the contract as per BS 848 Part I 1980,
the following class of tolerance are specified.
