The Watchman

The Watchman style emphasizes the need to maintain order. This kind of policing
occurs in densely populated areas which generate numerous calls to police for
assistance. The Watchman style departments utilize discretion to keep the peace.
The Officers don't put a lot of focus on minor offences, for example traffic violations
plus misdemeanors. Police Officers often resolve minor issues in the absence of a
serious crime, without the need of involving other law enforcement agencies in the
matter. Many police departments have a form of the watchman style, which is the
primary type of operating style.

Legalistic Style

The Police departments which operate using the legalistic style operate under the
letter of the law. The Police operate in a professional manner whereby contact
between people and the police have a formal neutral procedure especially when
applying the law to the community. The Procedures in this style are by the book and
it is characterized by high performance ratings which is displayed during arrests and
ticketing. Decision making starts from the top management to the subordinate
departments.

Service style

Service style policing often occurs in the middle plus upper class societies. The
police put focus on matters concerning community opinion as well as public
relations. The Service policing style puts less focus on minor crimes and puts more
focus on offences which violate the citizens privacy for example burglary, robbery.
The Officers make arrests only when it is absolutely necessary. The Police ensures
that they keep the communities continuously safe from outsiders who might commit
crimes, while at the same time protect the members within the community
boundaries. This kind of department operates with large financial strength while
utilizing current and the latest technological machinery due good financial status of
the community where they work.
