The Holidays are a good time
for giving the angler in your life something related
to this special pastime. Such a gift is more than just
thoughtful. If chosen with care it will get said angler out
of your hair for most of the winter.
Fishing books
Housatonic River Outfitters in Cornwall Bridge has an
color • foils excellent collection of angling books, from the practical
haircuts for men, women and children and technical, to the sort of lyrical (or overblown) prose

facials and full body waxing For sheer usefulness, “Instinctive Fly Fishing: A
518-789-6007 Guide’s Guide to Better Fishing” by Taylor Streit is the
138 ROUTE 44 • MILLERTON, N.Y. 12546 single best “how-to” book for all fly-rodders, at any level
of proficiency.
“The Fly Fisher’s Guide to Warmwater Lakes” by Cliff
Hauptman is another hugely useful book for those who
pursue bass and panfish in our ponds and lakes. It seems
to be out of print, but Amazon has inexpensive used cop-
ies listed.
Gear
Any of the fly shops below can hook you up with a
good rod, reel, or combination thereof. I think it advis-
able for the non-angler to buy from a store rather than
online, unless the angler in the family has left a subtle
hint as to what he (or she)needs to achieve the next
level, such as a catalog (with circled items) on the kitch-
en counter.
For those looking for a new rod but not prepared to
spend gobs of money, I will plug the rods from Temple
Fork, which are excellent at reasonable prices. (By rea-
sonable I mean under $300.)
I am also a fan of Orvis Clearwater reels, which are $49
($19 for an extra spool) and extremely resilient. Many
anglers make a fuss over their reels; I am not one of
them. A back-up reel with a new line on it is something
every fisherman should have handy, for those inevitable
moments when the fancy reel gets dinged up and won’t
turn.

A truly thoughtful gift is a new line, something fishermen

often overlook. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve started
out to fish after a long winter, only to discover my line is
cracked and useless.
The key here is to figure out what sort of line your angler
uses. (He probably has several but uses one or two almost
exclusively.) This can be accomplished by looking at the
spools of the reels, which often have a little sticker on them
indicating what kind of line it is — something like WF6F
(weight forward six weight floating). Write it down and tell
the salesman at the shop.

. . . Prescription Goggles
And Underwater Music

Continued from page 13

I ordered a pair and tried them out; they’re nifty

and I recommend them. Water doesn’t get into them
and they don’t fog up.
They are also super cheap ($5.60 at the Hotchkiss
store, $4 at swimoutlet.com but you have to pay for
shipping).
If you can’t figure how to set them up, send me an
e-mail, [email protected].
Prescription Goggles. Really.
One more eyepiece idea before we move on to
other swim products: Carl Marshall at Sharon Optical
has prescription goggles.
You can buy them ready-made (like over-the-coun-
ter reading glasses) for $55 a pair or you can get them
custom-made to your prescription for $170.
They’re available in smoke or blue and are made
by a company called Leader. It takes less than a week
to get a pair made to order. Swimmers say they are
especially nice for outdoor, open-water swimming.
How About Fins?
Fins are an excellent gift. Some pools have fins that
you can borrow, but it’s always nicer to have a pair
you can call your own.
Swimmer magazine recently tested a ton of fins,
and explained the difference between short-, medi-
um- and long-bladed models.
HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE The short fins require you to work really hard, ac-

magazine gave high marks to the Speedo Trialon ($30 list
or $24.95 at swimoutlet.com; they were on sale recently
for $22.95) and to the TYR Crossblade (list price $32 or
$27.95 at swimoutlet.com, on sale recently for $22.50).
Music. Yes, Music
One thing about indoor lap swimming is that it can be
quite dull, especially for swimmers who do lots and lots
(and lots) of laps.
Music makes all repetitive activities more interesting.
There are several waterproof MP3 players around; some
swimmers wrap their regular iPod or player in a water-
proof armband and get waterproof earbuds.
Something completely different, which many swim-
mers seem to like, is the Finis Swimp3. I can’t give you
the technical explanation of how this unit (which you
clip onto your goggles) works, but it’s small and fits in
your ears and the sound is conducted through water and
bone. When you step out of the water, the music stops.
For a more serious explanation, go to finisinc.com, or
you can learn more at swimoutlet.com, which has a 1GB
Finis Swimp3 for $135.
Then There’s Pool Time
Of course the best gift you can give a serious swimmer
is access to a serious pool, such as the one at The Hotch-
kiss School.
Morning adult lap swim sessions for the public are
Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
The swims are sponsored by the Salisbury and Sharon
recreation commissions; you don’t have to live in one of
those towns to swim at the pool. A single session costs
$5; a season pass for the entire winter is $200 but you can
contact the recreation directors to get a pro-rated fee (for
the MWF sessions, e-mail Lisa McAuliffe at recreation-
[email protected]; for TThS, e-mail Matt Mette at
[email protected]).
Swim instruction for experienced swimmers is also
available in winter at Hotchkiss. Coach Rick Vizzari has a
U.S. Masters swim team that meets Sundays at 2 p.m. All
swimmers have to join the U.S. Masters program, which
is about $40 a year; to get prices and dates for the 2011
sessions, contact Vizzari at [email protected].
Don’t be intimidated. Vizzari’s swimmers range from
serious tri-athletes to lap swimmers who want to upgrade
their strokes. His workouts are flexible and always in-

What holiday presents would

you find in Millbrook if your selection were limited to
anything horsey? Not actual horses of course, but just
anything for those equine lovers on your list.
Shop with a theme and you’ll find surprising items that
you might not have noticed like the collection of vintage
Kentucky Derby mint julep glasses at the Bottle Shop on
Route 44. Work your way through Millbrook from west
to east and stop at Yellow Church Antiques. In addition
to refined, framed, hunting and racing prints, the store
has a 19th-century Victorian rocking chair with a horse’s
head on the back and custom pillows featuring galloping
Indians on horseback.
Next stop: Merritt Bookstore has lots of equine coffee
table books, but also children’s books and games featur-
ing horses, a large stuffed horse, and serious books on
horse nutrition.
Heart & Soul Tack at 18 Washington Road, a store
devoted to riding with a great bulletin board of equine
events, offers everything from bridles, blankets and
boots to contemporary and traditional riding attire.

Though there was a time when I scoffed at the idea of
OPEN7DAYSAWEEK buying gift wrapping after the holidays, in order to stock
up for the next year, I now find myself searching for
deals everywhere I can. Call it cheap if you want. I call it
a dose of personal fiscal conservatism during our annual
celebration of socially liberal themes.
My ever-maturing fascination with saving a buck inten-
sified this November when I stepped into the Auxiliary
Thrift Shop in Winsted, operated by the the lovely ladies
and gentlemen from the charitable Auxiliary for Com-
munity Health. The store had just reopened for business
after a renovation, and the amount of Holiday stuff on
display was overwhelming. If you needed a wreath to
decorate your front door, a plate to serve shrimp cocktail
or items that play jingles, crack chestnuts and store cook-
ies, this was the place to be.
“It has been absolutely crazy today,” said Auxiliary for
Community Health President Milly Hudak during my
afternoon visit. “People have been in to buy all of their
holiday decorations — and not just little purchases.
They’ve been buying loads of stuff.”
Hudak noted that the thrift shop replenishes its inven-
tory every day with stock from its back room, which is
almost as large as the retail sales area. When a couple
of wreaths go out the door, two more are put up on the
back wall. Shelves are lined with figurines, stuffed ani-

mals, holiday signs, snowmen, strings of lights and glit-

ter. This all goes along with the store’s regular assort-
ment of clothing, shoes, coats and various household
items.
Hudak said auxiliary volunteers spent four days
transforming the thrift shop into a winter wonderland
after sorting through the best of their donations from
Winsted-area households.
“We had many new gift items this year and we sold a
HDTV LED lot of jewelry,” she added.
The sheer number of deals was enough to make this

XBR LCD writer’s head spin. Two-dollar DVDs? Sold! An all-in-

one bread maker for $18? I love it! A coffee grinder for
$8? Good luck finding that deal somewhere else.
Still, the most pleasant part of this shopping experi-
ence for me is knowing that I can find ordinary holiday
items that are either new or gently used, at a fraction
of the price that they would be at regular retail. The
holidays are expensive enough, buying gifts for fam-
ily members and friends, without adding up all of the
incidental items.
Some might say they sense a bit of a “humbug” tone
in all of this, but I say frugality is good in a slow econo-
my. In the end, the money goes to a great cause, as the
auxiliary uses proceeds to buy needed medical items
— defibrillators, cardiac rehabilitation equipment and
wheelchair lifts — for the community. So if I walk out
of the thrift shop with a few extra dollars in my pocket,
I say happy holidays.
