This manual is intended to assist in the handling and operation of the Scanjet 90-T
Tank Cleaning System. Continuos product improvement is the policy of Scanjet
Marine AB and we reserve the right to alter the specifications at any time without
prior notice.
INTRODUCTION
WORKING PRINCIPE
The cleaning media comes from the supply line onboard the
vessel and enter into the inlet housing and passes the vertical
turbine that drives the driving unit.
The cleaning media continue through the main pipe to the nozzle
and then out in the tank.
The driving unit will rotate and elevate the nozzle and will
hereby clean the tank in a spherical pattern. The rotation speed
is controlled by the rotation speed of the turbine and could easily
be set to desired speed.
The rotation and the elevation of the nozzle are indicated on the
scale on the lifting rod.
The elevation per revolution (Pitch) for the nozzle can be set to
different pre-programmed values by means of lifting or pushing
down the program knob. (See below).
TECHNICAL DATA
Rotating Speed: The rotation speed can vary between 1-3 min per turn depending on
the supply data and settings.
Performance data: The table below shows the approx. flow and jet length for each
combination of inlet pressure and nozzle diameter.
IMPORTANT !
NOTE! The use of tankcleaning machine may cause static electricity why
measures must be taken in order to avoid sparks and possible explosion by
having the tanks inert at time of cleaning.
OPERATION
Starting up
1. Remove protective cover.
3. Open the inlet valve slowly to start the machine. See page 16 for inspection
instruction during operation.
Setting Programs
The 90T Driving unit is delivered with pre-setted programs. The program is
adjusted by pushing down the program knobs. Each knob is giving 1,5° elevation per
turn giving the following degrees of vertical elevation per revolution of the nozzle
(pitch).
Example 1: The program is set to give 4,5° elevation per turn of the
nozzle and one turn takes 50 sec (measured with a wrist watch by
checking time for one run indicated by lifting rod). How long time
does it take to wash the tank from top to bottom (180°)?
A = Pitch 4,5 °
B = 50 sec
C = 180 (180 to 0 degrees)
Example 2: Two program knobs have been pushed down giving a pitch of 3°/rev. We
would like to do a cleaning between 120 degrees and 45 degrees. How long time does
it take? Same revolution speeds as in example No 1 above.
A = 3,0 °/rev
B = 50
C = 75 degrees (125-45)
B) Calculation of cleaning time for getting out a certain amount of cleaning media
(prewash).
- The total flow Q (m³/h) through the nozzles at the specific pressure used is taken
from the table at page 6. The total flow in the tank is then calculated by adding the
flow from all machines used at the same time in the tank.
T=R/Q*60 (min)
Example 3:
- Prewash rules gives that 10 m³ of cleaning media should be used.
- We have a tank with two (2) machines having 22 mm nozzles and will operate the
tank-cleaning machine at 8 bar pressure.
- How long time should we operate the machine?
Solution
Machine data at page 13 shows that at 8 bar and 22 mm nozzle will give a flow of 50
m³/h per machine. Total flow will then be calculated adding both machines giving a
total flow in the tank of 100 m³/h.

Rotation speed of gun (r/min)
Speed Adjustment
The rotating speed for the machine could be adjusted by changing the rotation speed
of the turbine. The speed can be adjusted while operating the machine by doing the
following:
Stop the machine while adjusting the nut, and start again when the nuts are
tightened. Check the speed, if not ok adjust again.
During operation
During the cleaning operation the machine should be inspected and checked for
leakage by opening inspection cover in cofferdam (A) and inspection hole (B). Make
sure that the machine operates, as it should by checking that the lifting rod is
rotating and elevating (C).
Note that leakage at the nozzle house is normal and necessary to flush the Teflon
bearing and gears
Closing down
2. Make sure that the machine is left with the nozzle pointing downwards as
this automatically drains the main pipe and ensure that no cleaning media
will be left in the unit.
The nozzle is pointing downwards when the lifting rod is in its lowest
position. If necessary the nozzle should be hand manoeuvred by using the
hand-cranking device to get the nozzle pointing downwards.
MAINTENANCE
Wash Unit
- Check gears so they are properly greased. If needed add additional grease.
Suitable grease is: Mobil OGL 007 or equivalent.
- Check the continuos screw and re-grease it. (A)
- Change freewheels, shafts and bearings inside the drive unit (B).
- Change bearings at the turbine shaft. See page 25.
-Inspect, and change turbine ball bearing by removing driving unit and open cover
to the inlet house.
- Change all grease in gearbox by dismantling the units, removing all old lubrication
and adding new grease. Weared parts should be changed.
- Make a complete survey of the gun unit installed below deck. Check that the nozzle
is having a free flow and are properly attached. Change teflon bearings.
To remove the driving unit from the washing unit at time of service etc. the
following procedure should be followed:
To replace the driving unit on the washing unit at time of service etc. the following
procedure should be followed:
1. Make sure that the continuos screw is in its lowest position by using the
hand-cranking tool. Press the indication rod down while using the tool in order to
find the lowest position
2. Place the drive unit on the pull-rod and make sure that the coupling is properly
attached by turning the drive-unit. Fasten the indication rod and lower the unit on
the turbine shaft and make sure that the connection is correct. The turbine shaft
will automatically find the correct position at time of starting the machine. Please
also check that the turbine shaft is rotating without any disturbance by open the
cover (B) and use Allen key at the turbine shaft.
NOTE! When the indication rod is connected properly the rod should have been
screwed into the threads ~10 turns. If not: Make sure that the rod is in its lowest
position by using the hand-manoeuvring tool and rotate the tool clockwise in order
to find the correct connection.
