Sample Problems in Aircon1

1. Data is provided for an 80-person conference room including indoor/outdoor conditions, heat loads, air flows, and coil parameters. The apparatus dew point is calculated as 7.6°C and total heat load is 48.34 kW. 2. Data is given for an air conditioning system for a restaurant including capacities, flows, loads, and conditions. Calculations determine the air delivery as 4313 m3/hr, recirculated air percentage as 66.8%, refrigeration load as 10.7 tons, and coil dew point and bypass factor as 12.2°C and 0.2235. 3. A dryer is designed to reduce copra moisture from

1. The following data relate to a conference room for seating 80 persons.

Inside Design Conditions 22°C DB, 55% RH

Outside Design Conditions 38°C DB, 28°C WB
Sensible and latent heat loads per person 75 W and 45 W, respectively
Lights and fans load 12,000 W
Sensible heat gain through glass, wall, ceiling etc. 12,000 W
Air infiltration 18 m3/min
Fresh air supply 80 m3/min
By-pass factor of the coils 0.1
If two-third of recirculated room air and one-third of fresh air are mixed before entering the
cooling coils, determine:
a. Apparatus dew point temperature (7.6°C)
b. Grand total heat load, and (48.34 kW)
2. The following data is available for designing an air-conditioning system for a restaurant:
Inside design conditions 26°C DB, 55% RH
Outdoor conditions 36°C DB, 27°C WB
Minimum temperature of air supplied to room 16°DB
Total amount of fresh air supplied 1550 m3/hr
Total infiltration air 390 m3/hr
Seating chairs for dining 45
Employees serving the meals 5
Sensible heat gain per person 60 W
Latent heat gain per sitting person 45 W
Latent heat gain per employee 75 W
Sensible heat added from meals 0.16 kW
Latent heat added from meals 0.28 kW
Total heat flow through walls, roof and floor 5.9 kW
Solar heat gain through glass 1.9 kW
Equipment sensible heat gain 2.75 kW
Equipment latent heat gain 0.65 kW
Motor power connected to fan 7.5 kW
If the fan is installed before the conditioner, determine:
a. Amount of air delivered to the room in m3/hr (4313 m3/hr)
b. Percentage of recirculated air (66.8%)
c. Refrigeration load on the coil in tons of refrigeration, and (10.7 TR)
d. Dew point temperature of the cooling coil and the by-pass factor. (12.2°C, 0.2235)
3. A dryer is to be designed to reduce the moisture content of copra from 52% to 6%. Atmospheric
air at 31°C DB and 24°C WB is heated by a steam coils to 88°C before entering the dryer. Steam
enters the reheater at a pressure of 135 kPaa and 95% quality. The air leaves at 40°C with a
relative humidity of 80%. Copra enters the dryer at the rate of 1.30 kg/s. Determine the
a. mass flow rate of air and
b. mass flow rate of steam.
