Cs Tutorial 3 PDF

1. The document discusses matched filters. It describes the impulse response and output of a matched filter for a signal s(t) shown in Figure 1. 2. Figure 2 shows two orthogonal pulses s1(t) and s2(t). Matched filters are determined for each pulse individually and then connected in parallel to form a two-dimensional matched filter. 3. It is demonstrated that when s1(t) is input to the two-dimensional filter, the output of the lower matched filter is zero, and when s2(t) is input, the output of the upper matched filter is zero.

Matched Filters

1. Consider the signal s (t ) shown in Fig. 1.

(a) Determine the impulse response of a filter matched to this signal and sketch it as
a function of time.
(b) Plot the matched filter output as a function of time.

2. Figure 2(a) shows a pair of pulses that are orthogonal to each other over the interval
[0,T]. In this problem we investigate the use of this pulse-pair to study a two-
dimensional matched filter.
(a) Determine the matched filter for the pulses s1 (t ) and s 2 (t ) considered
individually.
(b) Form a two-dimensional matched filter by connecting the two matched filters of
part (a) in parallel, as shown in Fig. 2b. Hence , demonstrate the following:
2.b.1. When the pulse s1 (t ) is applied to this two-dimensional filter, the
response of the lower matched filter is zero.
2.b.2. When the pulse s 2 (t ) is applied to the two-dimensional filter, the response
of the upper matched filter is zero.
