TEACHING GUIDE

in
STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY 11

TOPIC/LESSON NAME Functions and Their Graphs

CONTENT STANDARDS The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of
random variables and probability distributions.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS The learner is able to apply an appropriate random variable
for a given real-life problem (such as in decision making and
games of chance).
LEARNING COMPETENCIES The learner...

1. llustrates the mean and variance of a discrete random

variable.
2. Calculates the mean and the variance of a discrete
random variable.
3. Interprets the mean and the variance of a discrete
random variable.
4. Solves problems involving mean and variance of
probability distributions.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Explain the meaning of mean and variance of a discrete
random variable
2. Compute and interpret the mean and variance of a
discrete random variable

INTRODUCTION/MOTIVATION/INSTRUCTION

A. Preliminary Activity

Checking of Attendance
Classroom Management

B. Activity

1. The teacher conducts a review about their previous examination regarding

Discrete Probability Distribution.

C. Analysis

1. The teacher lets the learners answer the problem:

a. In a game of chance, a man is paid P50 if he gets all the heads or all tails when
3 coins are tossed and he pays P30 if either 1 or 2 heads show. What is the
expected gain?
2. The teacher discusses the mean and variance of a discrete random variable.
3. She gives the following example problems for further discussions.
a. A census taker is gathering data on the gender of the eldest child in the
family. Let X = the number of girls, where X = 1 if the eldest is a girl and X = 0
otherwise. Find the mean and variance of the probability distribution for the
random variable.
b. A small study aims to see the correlation between having a tattoo and cases
of clinical depression. In one group of 12 people from the same age bracket, 7
have 1 tattoo, 3 have 2 tattoos and the rest have 3 tattoos. If a person is
randomly picked from this group and evaluated for depression, what is the
expected number of tattoos that the person will have?
c. Miguel and Luis are playing a game. Miguel will roll a number cube and Luis
will guess the number that comes up. Luis pays P20 to make a guess and if he
guesses correctly, Miguel pays him P500. If Luis makes 5 guesses, how much
money is he expected to win?

D. Abstraction

1. The teacher asks the class some follow up questions:

a. How to calculate the mean and variance of a discrete random variable?
b. How can this topic be helpful in a real-life situation?

E. Application

1. The teacher gives more exercises regarding the mean and variance of a discrete
random variable.

2. She calls for some of the students to answer it on the board.

a. Consider the probability distribution of the number of goals scored by
Team Pinoy.

Number of goals Number of games

scored
0 5
1 7
2 3
3 3
4 1
5 1

Find the mean and standard deviation of the probability distribution.

b. In a Math Club, there are 7 girls and 5 boys. A team of 6 students must be
formed to compete in a math contest. Let X be the number of boys in the
team.

1. What are the possible values of X?

2. Construct a probability distribution for the random variable.
3. Construct a histogram.
4. What is the probability that the team will have the same number
of girls and boys?
5. What is the probability that the team formed will be made up of
only girls or only boys?
6. Find the mean and the standard deviation of the probability
distribution.

c. Determine the variance and SD of the PMF:

X P(x) XP(x) x-𝝁 (𝐱 − 𝝁)𝟐 (𝐱 − 𝝁)𝟐 𝑷(𝒙)

1 0.15
2 0.25
3 0.30
4 0.15
5 0.10
6 0.05

EVALUATION

Answer the following:

1. Find the mean and standard deviation of the following probability distribution.

x P(x)
1 0.15
2 0.30
3 0.25
4 0.30

2. Two cards are drawn from a standard deck. Let X = the number of black cards drawn.
Find the mean and standard deviation of the probability distribution for the given
random variable.

3. Refer to this situation: Two standard number cubes are tossed.

a. Let X be the sum of the numbers. Construct a probability distribution for the
random variable X.
b. Find the mean and standard deviation of the probability distribution.
c. Let Y be the larger of the 2 numbers. Construct a probability distribution for Y.
d. Find the mean and standard deviation of the probability distribution item C.
e. Compare the means and the standard deviation of the probability distribution
for X and Y.
