A Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

a. identify the coordinates of given points in the Cartesian Plane;

b. plot points given their coordinates in the Cartesian Plane;

c. appreciate the value of Cartesian Plane in real life situations by giving example of

its uses.

A. Preparation

I am requesting everybody to please stand for (Students do as told.)

the prayer.
Almighty God we praise and thank you

for all the blessings and for the most

precious gift of life. Thank you for giving

us our parents who have sacrificed so

much for us and our teachers who have

molded us. Dear Lord, we humbly ask you

to forgive our sins and all our inequities in

life. These we pray in the name of our

Lord. Amen!

Please arrange your chairs before you will (Students do as told.)

sit down.

Who is absent today? None teacher.

Clap your hands 10 times for the perfect (Students do as told.)

attendance.

Before we will start, I want you to be (Students listen attentively.)

reminded of our classroom rules. It is

known as LRC. L stands for Listen

attentively, R for Respect and C for

Cooperate.

What did we disccuss last meeting? We discussed about the number line.

Very good. Last meeting we discussed

about the number line.

I have here an activity for you to test

whether you have fully grasp our last

topic.

Activity 1. BOWOWOW

This activity is in the form of a game which will

help you recall the concept of a number line.

This is good for 5 minutes.

Mechanics:

 Group yourselves into 9 or eleven (Students do as told)

members.

 Form a line facing your classmates.

 Assign integers which are arranged

from least to greatest to each group

member from left to right.

 Assign zero to the group member at the

middle.

 Recite the number assign to you.

 Bow as you recite and when the last

member is done reciting, all of you bow


together and say bowowow!

Clap your hands for an excellent

performance.

Now, I have here questions. Please raise

your right hand if you want to answer and

answer me in a complete sentence. Am I

understood? Yes teacher.

What is the number line composed of? The number line is composed of positive

and negative integers.

Very good.

Where is zero found on the number line? Zero is found at the middle of the number

line.

What integers can be seen on the left side Negative integers can be seen on the left

of zero? What about on the right side of side of the zero while positive integers can

zero? be seen on the right side of the zero.

Since you have fully grasped our last

topic, we will move on to our new

topic. But before that I have here a

picture.

contribution in the field of

Mathematics?

He is one of the great mathematicians.

His name is Rene Descartes. He is

known as the “father of Modern

Mathematics”. He pioneered the so

called “Cartesian Plane”.

Do you have now an idea regarding Our topic for today is all about the

what is our topic for today? Cartesian Plane or the Rectangular

Coordinate System.

What a brilliant mind you have.

3. Statement of the Aim:

Today we will discuss about the “ The

Cartesian Plane ”.

B. Presentation:

The Rectangular Coordinate System is also

known as the Cartesian Plane or simply xy- (Students are listening attentively.)
plane in honor of the French Mathematician

Rene Descartes (1596-1650).

The Cartesian Plane is composed of two

perpendicular number lines that meet at the

point of origin ( 0,0) and divide the plane into

four regions called quadrants. It is composed of

infinitely many points. Each point in the

coordinate system is defined by an ordered pair

of the form (x,y), where x and y are real

numbers. The first coordinate of a point is

called the x-coordinate or abscissa and the

second coordinate is called the y-coordinate or

ordinate. We call (x,y) an ordered pair because

it is different from (y,x).

The horizontal and vertical lines, typically

called the x-axis and the y-axis, respectively,

intersect at the common point (0,0). The signs of

the first and second coordinates of a point vary

in the four quadrants.

To illustrate, here is the Cartesian Plane


Take note that there are also points which lie in

the x and y –axes. The points which lie in the x-

axis have coordintes ( x,0) and the poiints which

lie on y-axis have coordinates (0,y), where x and

y are real numbers.

Example 1:

Dolphins can be found in many areas of the

Philippine seas. Marine scientist sometimes use

grids to locate the dolphins. Below is a sample

Cartesian Plane where the locations of dolphins

are marked. Identify the coordinates of each A (0,-5)

point where the dolphins can be spotted. Tell in B ( 5, -1)

which quadrant each point can be found. C ( -5,-1)

E ( -3,-4)

F ( 4,-5)

G ( 2,-3)

H ( -4, 3)

I ( -2,2)

J (2,1)

K ( 5,5)

Example 2.

Plot each point being described. Label the

coordinates.

a. I ( -3,1)

d. V (-3,-3)

e. E (0,-4)

f. M ( 5,-3)

g. A (0,0)

h. T ( 2,1)

i. H ( -2,-2)

C. Generalization

Fourth quadrant of my region is good for a

pair of positive X and negative Y.

So don’t hesitate to come on me and know
