Applications

AquaCon is a moderate molecular weight hydrophilic ter-polymer based on polyacrylamide. The polymer is also
composed of sulfonated moieties that enable the polymer to better tolerate brine fluids, especially those containing
divalent cations such as Ca2+ and Mg2+. This characteristic, coupled with a unique chemical structure that allows
the polymer to attach itself to rock, provides the basis for the polymer’s performance.
Matrix Applications - AquaCon treatment candidates include wells that produce water from a zone distinct from oil
or gas production zone(s) or produce water fractionally through a hydrocarbon-bearing zone, in which treatment can
be bullheaded or pumped without the need for mechanical zone isolation.
Acidizing Applications (ConformAcid) - AquaCon can be added to acid diverter stages, or used as a pre-treatment
to sandstone acidizing in oil or gas wells with water production from a bottom zone or lower portion of the
hydrocarbon-producing zone. AquaCon application is amenable to placement with coiled tubing.
Fracturing Applications (ConformFrac) - AquaCon is compatible with and can be added to BJ water-based or oil-
based fracturing fluids to reduce post-stimulation water production, and increase fracturing fluid efficiency, thereby
increasing effective fracture length and conductivity. AquaCon may also be pumped as a prepad stage or as a post-
fracturing treatment following load recovery.
Features

Enhances Hydrocarbon Production

The strong water-wetting properties of AquaCon and its unique ability to bind to formation surfaces enhance
production of oil or gas relative to water.
Reduces Water Production
The strong water-wetting properties and selective restriction of aqueous fluid flow reduce formation water
permeability, thereby significantly decreasing water flow.
Ease of Mixing
AquaCon concentrate can be readily transferred and mixed in tanks or on the fly, as AquaCon is highly soluble, and
the concentrate is easily diluted further in water.
Wide Temperature Use Range
AquaCon is effective at temperatures up to approximately 250°F (121°C).
Wide concentration Use range
AquaCon can be applied in a wide range of concentrations, depending on the application. Matrix and ConformAcid
applications may utilize 3% to 12% (30 to 120 gpt) AquaCon concentrate in water (preferably KCl brine solution),
depending on formation permeability and treatment objective. ConformFrac applications would utilize lower
concentrations, e.g., 1-2% AquaCon or less.
Flexibility
AquaCon can be used in matrix, acidizing, and fracturing applications. AquaCon can be combined with other
relative permeability modifier (RPM) products, such as Aquatrol I, in single treatment solution, or as a pre- or post-
treatment stage.
Pumpability
No friction problems encountered at matrix treatment rates. Because AquaCon has friction-reducing properties,
there would be little to no effect on fracturing fluid friction properties in ConformFrac applications.

Product Information

Benefits

Effective in formations with permeabilities as high as 1500 mD or more.

Reduces permeability to water, but leaves permeability to oil relatively unchanged.
AquaCon is a relative permeability modifier (RPM) that attaches to rock surfaces.
AquaCon is compatible with multivalent cations and most chemical additives.
Limitations

Shear Stability
The polymer in the AquaCon concentrate is susceptible to shear degradation. Consequently, the highest pump rate
in matrix or ConformAcid applications should be 0.05 bbl/min/perforation and further, never more than 2 bbl/min, but
not to exceed the maximum matrix injection rate.

Treatment Design Data
The amount of AquaCon treatment fluid is determined by calculating the volume of fluid necessary to occupy 10
radial feet of formation calculated from the wellbore. This 10 radial feet of penetration should occur over the desired
treatment height. The equation for this calculation is shown below.
Treatment Volume (gal) = 7.4805 * φ* (R2-R1) 2 * H * π
R2 = Radius of Desired Treatment (ft)
R1 = Wellbore Radius (ft) (hole size radius)
H = Treatment Height (ft)
φ = Porosity (fractional volume of total)
π = Pi (3.14159)
