Stasis Theory in Academic

Writing
ENGL101
What is Stasis Theory?
Stasis: The way you proceed towards a particular argument

You find the central issue within a conflict, and then you find arguments that
address the chosen issue.

Four-part pre-writing process:

1. Facts
2. Definition
3. Quality
4. Policy
History of Stasis Theory
● Developed in Ancient Greece by Aristotle and Hermagoras
● Later refined by Roman rhetoriticians
● Stasis theory has historically been used to take a stand with a particular
viewpoint and be able to find supporting evidence with this viewpoint.
● In ancient Rome, if legal disputants could not agree with the presented
information in one of the stases, the argument would stop and plaintiffs
would attempt to achieve stasis (find common ground) within the
disputed information
Types of Stasis (Fearless Writing)
● Conjecture
○ Did it happen, does it exist?
● Cause/Effect
○ How did it get this way?
● Value
○ Is it a good or bad thing?
● Action
○ What should we do about this?
● Jurisdiction
○ Who should handle this matter?
Facts
● Did something happen?
● What are the facts?
● How did it begin and what are its causes?
● What changed to create the problem/issue?

For this part, you should critically analyze the underlying problem within the
topic that you are investigating

*Conjecture and Cause and Effect

Definition
● What is the nature of the problem/issue?
● What kind of a problem/issue is it?
● To what larger class of things or events does it belong?
● What are its parts, and how is it related?

For this, you want to investigate the more specific aspects of the issue and try
to determine how these issues connect to the larger problem as a whole.

*Conjecture and Cause and Effect

Quality
● Is it a good thing?
● How serious is the problem/issue?
● What happens if we don’t do anything
● What are the costs of solving the problems/issues?

For this, you want to see how if this issue has far-reaching consequences, and
if this can be presented through extrinsic or intrinsic exigence.

*Value
Policy
● Should action be taken?
● What should be done about this problem?
● What needs to happen to solve this problem/issue?

For this, you want to analyze what can be changed about current
problem/issue and how this change can have a far-reaching impact

*Jurisdiction

*Action
