PARAMAGNETIC ANALYZER

Oxygen is a paramagnetic gas and is attracted into a strong magnetic field. Because this measurement is
a purely physical effect, nothing is consumed and in principle the cell has an unlimited life. However,
contamination of the cell by dust, dirt, corrosives or solvents can lead to deterioration.

The operating principle of the paramagnetic sensor is the paramagnetic susceptibility of the oxygen
molecule, a physical property which distinguishes oxygen from most other gases. The sensor incorporates
two nitrogen-filled glass spheres mounted on a rotating suspension. This assembly is suspended in a
strong magnetic field. The oxygen in the surrounding gas is attracted to the magnetic field, resulting in a
force on the glass spheres. The strength of the torque acting on the suspension is proportional to the
oxygen content of the surrounding gases.

Principle of Operation

Refer to Figure 1 above. The measuring system is “null-balanced”. First, a photo-sensor that
receives light reflected from a mirror attached to the suspension assembly senses the "zero" position of
the suspension assembly as measured in nitrogen. The photo-sensor output is fed back to a coil around
the assembly of the suspension. This feedback has two objectives.

First, as oxygen is added into the cell, due to the input current in the coil, the torque acting on
the suspension assembly is offset by a re-storage torque. The input current is directly proportional to
the specimen fuel's volume magnetic susceptibility and, thus, to the partial oxygen concentration in the
sample after calibration. The present thus gives a precise measurement of the oxygen concentration in
the gas mixture.

Secondly, the electromagnetic feedback "stretches" the suspension, dampens it heavily and
increases its natural frequency, making the suspension shock-resistant.

Calibration

Since the instrument uses an absolute measuring concept, when designed and tested by the
manufacturer, no further modification of the device is needed. Factory calibration consists of digital
adjustment to accept the input signal from the detector cell and to verify that the instrument reads
correctly on the atmosphere, 20.9%. The device will then be tested for 100% oxygen content to be read
correctly.
