Lintel Design

The lintel beam has dimensions of 230x230 mm and is reinforced with 2 bars of 12 mm diameter on each side and 2 bars of 10 mm diameter on the top and bottom. The loading on the beam includes a brick wall load of 3.04 kN and the self-weight of the beam. The design calculations show that the beam has an ultimate positive bending capacity of 11.5 kNm and ultimate shear capacities of 21.0 kN without shear reinforcement and 38.8 kN with the minimum shear reinforcement of 8 mm bars at 625 mm spacing.

Lintel Beam:

 Dimensions and arrangement

 Material properties: M25 (fck = 25MPa) and Fe500 (fy = 500 MPa)
 Clear cover considered is 40 mm
 Load Combination considered is 1.4 DL
 Lintel beam 230 X 230
 Summary:
Reinforcement 2-N12 at top and bottom and 1-N12 at each side
Beam Forces:

Parameters Reinforcement
( kN.m ) ( kN )
2N10 – Top and Bottom each
Capacity B 0.23 x 0.23m 11.5 21
2N10 – Top and Bottom each
Actual Loads B 0.23 x 0.23m 1.86 4.05

 Loading calculations -
Height of wall above lintel = 1.6 m (assumed)
Length of the lintel = clear span + 0.3 = 0.82 + 0.3 = 1.12 m
Brick density = 20 kN/m3
Concrete density = 25 kN/m3

Masonary load =
W1 = 0.5 (l x l.Sin60 x t x b)
W1 = 0.5 x 1.12 x (1.12.Sin60) x 0.28 x 20
W1 = 3.04 kN
Moment due to Brick = W1.l / 6
M1 = 4.89 x 1.12 / 6 =0.91 kN.m
Lintel Self- Wt =
W2 = 0.28 x 0.3 x 25
W2 = 2.1 kN/m
Moment due to Self-wt = W2 x l2/8
M2 = 2.1 x 1.122 / 8 =0.329 kN.m
Total BM = M1 + M2 = 1.239 kN.m
Factored BM, Mu= 1.5 x M = 1.86 kN.m
Shear Force,
V = wl/2 + W/2
= (2.1 x 1.12 /2) + (3.04/2)
= 2.69 kN
Vu = 1.5 x 2.69 = 4.05 kN

Vuc = b1b2b3bvdo(Astf'c/bvdo)1/3 CL8.2.7.1
Ductility of beam section, Vuc = 29.93 kN b 1 = 1.1(1.6 - do/1000) > 1.1
fVuc = 20.95 kN b1 = 1.557

SUMMARY
Positive Bending Moment Capacity Shear rein. Bar size = 8 mm Legs = 2
A sv.min prov. = 100.48 Spacing Req. = 625 mm
fMu = 11.5 kNm
Hence provide #8mm bar at 625mm c/c as min. shear reinforcement
Shear capacity without shear reinforcement

fVuc = 21.0 kN Shear reinforcement required :

Shear rein. Bar size = 8 mm Legs = 2

Shear capacity with minimum shear reinforcement A sv pro. = 100.48 Spacing Req. = 200 mm

fVumin = 38.8 kN

Shear capacity for shear reinforcement Vus = 46.5 kN

fVucs = 53.5 Vuc + Vus

Vucs =

Vucs = 76.40 kN
fVucs = 53.48 kN
