orthogonal reduction. Find the set of non-zero values x1 , x2 , x3 which will make the
quadratic form vanish. Also find its nature, index, signature and rank. (16)

8. (a) Verify Stoke’s theorem for F~ = xy~i − 2yz~j − zx~k where S is the open surface of the
rectangular parallelopiped formed by the planes x = 0, x = 1, y = 0, y = 2, z = 3 above
the XOY plane. (16)

(b) i. Show that the field of force given by F~ = (y 2 cos x + z 3 )~i + (2y sin x − 4)~j + (3xz 2 + 2)~k
is conservative and find its scalar potential. Also find the work done in moving the
particle in the field from (0, 1, −1) to ( π2 , −1, 2). (8)

of the normal to the surface x log z − y 2 + 4 = 0 at the point (−1, 2, 1). (8)
