THEORY INTO PRACTICE – EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

PART 6: TWO DAYS OF SCHOOL

The final part of the TIP Portfolio is a culminating exercise. Based upon everything you have learned
about your LCAS classroom from the data and all the information you have created so far in this
portfolio, describe what you will do the day before the students arrive in your class at the beginning of a
school year and then what you will do on the first day of school to honor who your students are and
start the year off right.

THIS SHOULD BE IN AN OUTLINE FORMAT (LIKE A LIST OF “THINGS TO DO”) ALONG WITH A RATIONALE
FOR EACH “THING” THAT MAKES IT CLEAR EACH STEP OF YOUR PLAN IS DEVELOPMENTALLY
APPROPRIATE.

THE DAY BEFORE THEY ARRIVE:

1. Arrange the desks

- I will arrange the desks in a way where I feel my students can be the most productive. I will
make create a reading corner, math section and since my class contains more low concrete
operational, I will put them into groups of 4-5 desks. Also, I will not put all the low concrete
operational students together, I will mix the students.
2. Rules
- I will create a set of rules for my class. I will show them a presentation of the rules just so
they know what I am looking for in my classroom and how I would like them to act.
3. Decorations
- I will put educational/appropriate decorations and posters on my wall to relate to the
content.
4. Icebreaker
- I will plan an icebreaker for my students so they will be able to learn about their classmates.

THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL:

1. How are you feeling?

- Before they walk into my class, I will have a happy, so-so and sad face on the wall before my
door. I will ask them how they are feeling before they walk in so that I know how they are
feeling and so they know that I care. They will just point to the emotion.
2. Nametags/ Lanyards
- Once they point to their emotion, I will hand them out their nametags and then tell them to
find their name on their desk. This will give them a chance to look around for a little bit and
see their surroundings of where they will be sitting.
3. Rules
- After the class has settled, I will then bring out my set of rules. I will explain my expectations
of the class then ask if there is anything they would like to add to the rules. I want my
students to have a voice and be able to make their own rules in reason.
4. Icebreaker

PART 6: TWO DAYS OF SCHOOL

- As soon as the rules are done, to switch it up, I want to do an icebreaker. This will bring
some fun into the classroom during a period of instructions. I want to be able to learn about
my students as well as they learn about each other.
5. Line up
- After the icebreaker, we will go over how to get in line for lunch recess, special area, etc. We
will pick one-line leader a week then they will go in alphabetical order. I want to have a line
leader to be able to teach them how to lead and give them something to look forward too.
