    Examples of Deductive Reasoning:

    Example 1:

    Major Premises (MP): All men are mortal.

    Minor Premises (mp): Socrates is a man.

    Conclusion: Therefore, Socrates is mortal.

    Example 2:

    (MP): Jenna is in Mrs. Jones' class.

    (mp): Mrs. Jones' class is in the library.

    Conclusion: Jenna will be in the library.

    Example 3:

    (MP): All apples are fruits.

    (mp): The Granny Smith is a type of apple.

    Conclusion: The Granny Smith is a fruit.

    Example 4:

    (MP): All cows are mammals.

    (mp): Bessie is a cow.

    Conclusion: Bessie is a mammal.

    Example 5:

    (MP): All of the women in my family have college degrees.

    (mp): My Aunt Joan is visiting today.


    Conclusion: Aunt Joan has a college degree.

    Examples of Syllogism:

    Example 1:

    (MP): All numbers ending in 0 or 5 are divisible by 5.

    (mp): The number 35 ends with a 5.

    Conclusion: Therefore, it must be divisible by 5.

    Example 2:

    (MP): All cats have a keen sense of smell.

    (mp): Fluffy is a cat

    Conclusion: Therefore, Fluffy has a keen sense of smell.

    Example 3:

    (MP): All noble gases are stable.

    (mp): Helium is a noble gas

    Conclusion: Therefore, helium is stable.

    Example 4:

    (MP): All birds are animals.

    (mp): Turkey vultures are birds.

    Conclusion: Therefore, Turkey vultures are animals.

    Example 5:

    (MP): All Olympic runner are fast.


    (mp): Usain Bolt is an Olympic runner.
    Conclusion: Therefore, Usain Bolt is fast.

    Examples of Inductive Reasoning:

    Example 1:

    If you review the population information of a city for the past 15 years, you may observe that
    the population has increased at a consistent rate. If you want to predict what the population
    will be in five years, you can use the evidence or information you have to make an estimate.

    Example 2:

    (MP): Maximilian is a shelter dog.

    (mp): He is happy.

    Conclusion: All shelter dogs are happy.

    Example 3:

    (MP): The first lipstick I pulled from my bag is red.

    (mp): The second lipstick I pulled from my bag is red.

    Conclusion: Therefore, all the lipsticks in my bag are red.

    Example 4:

    (MP): My mother is Irish.

    (mp): She has blond hair.

    Conclusion: Therefore, everyone from Ireland has blond hair.

    Example 5:

    (MP): The chair in the living room is red.

    (mp): The Chair in the dining room is red.


    Conclusion: Therefore, all the chairs in the house are red.

    Examples of Enthymeme:

    Example 1

    Susan is a Christian. Susan goes to the church on Sunday.

    Major Premises: All Christian goes to the church on Sunday.

    Minor Premises: Susan goes to the church on Sunday.

    Conclusion: Susan is a Christian.

    Example 2:

    You own a Plasma TV. Therefore, you are not poor

    Major Premises: People who own plasma TV are not poor.

    Minor Premises: You own a Plasma TV.

    Conclusion: Therefore, you are not poor

    Example 3:

    This has perjured himself in the past. Hence, this man is not be trusted.

    Major Premises: Those who perjure themselves cannot be trusted

    Minor Premises: This has perjured himself in the past

    Conclusion: Hence, this man is not be trusted.

    Example 4:

    Racial profiling is unfair. Racial profiling policies should be abolished.

    Major Premises: Unfair policies should be abolished


    Minor Promises: Racial profiling is unfair.

    Conclusion: Racial profiling policies should be abolished.

    Example 5:

    You never see the Clark Kent and Superman together. Clark Kent and Superman may be the
    same person.

    Major premises: If you never see two people together, they may be the same person.

    Minor Premises: You never see the Clark Kent and Superman together.

    Conclusion: Clark Kent and Superman may be the same person.
