ELECTIVE 3
SEMINAR DESIGN
1ST SEM, SY 2019-2020
Activity Title
Rationale
Elective 3, Teaching Indigenous Peoples is a one (1) unit course that aims to prepare Pre-Service
Teachers from BEEd and BSEd to become effective and efficient teachers for Indigenous Peoples.
In relevance to the needs of the IP communities for a culturally-sensitive, appropriate and
holistic education, Elective 3 faculty found it vital to conduct a seminar-workshop to its students,
imparting them information, awareness, enhancement as well as to take action and participate in
educating IPs in our country-leading them to new perspectives in understanding and empowering
indigenous citizens.
The knowledge, skills, and values that will be gained by PSTs in this seminar will equip them
with basic and deep understanding of the rich history, culture, and identity of the IPs, which would
help in the development of an appropriate IP curriculum. Also, give meaning and response to the
provisions of the Republic Act 8371 of 1997 otherwise known as Indigenous Peoples Right Act (IPRA
Law) and focusing on the diversity of learners which was mentioned in one of the domains of National
Competency-Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS).
This particular seminar on updating knowledge and meaningful activities will surely cater
students’ needs in teaching IPs. Likewise serves as an initial mechanism to mentor both faculty
members and students in their elective 3 classroom activities, thus combining expertise with strategies
relevant to IP practices in education.
