Laser Beam Machining ( LBM ). What are the major applications of LBM?

8) a) Briefly describe the different important parts of an ultrasonic machining unit. b) Describe how
frequency and amplitude of vibration and abrasive diameter affect the MMR in USM. Draw the
different types of concentrators used in USM.

9) a) Draw the basic electrical waveform and briefly describe spark initiation and material removal
mechanism in EDM. What are the effects of process variables on roughness in EDM? b) For a
spark erosion machining of a 25 mm2 square through hole in a solid carbon steel plate of 7 mm
thickness, a brass tool is used with kerosene as dielectric, the resistance and capacitance in the RC
circuit is 80Ω and 12ΩF respectively. The supply voltage is 220 volts. For a certain gap
discharge takes place at 120 volts. Estimate the time required to complete the job.
