CHAPTER I.

THE BACKGROUND OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM

A. Introduction

On-the-Job Training is part of a college curriculum that aims to train and orient

students about the work and their future career. It is a type of skill development where a

worker learns how to do the work through hands-on experience. On-the-Job Training is

one method by which students are exposed with different work situation designed to give

students an opportunity to experience and a chance to apply the theories and computation

that they have learned from the school. It also helps the students to acquire relevant

knowledge and skills by performing an actual work setting.

On-the-Job Training is very important not only to teach students regarding their

chosen career but also to show students the reality about working. The students will be

exposed to the actual work related to the course that they are taking. It also allows those

with no experience to work and to learn at the same time. On-the-Job Training helps the

trainee to learn more about his chosen field and practice what he learn from school. It

helps in building up of the trainee’s competence. When a students is competent enough,

he/she will be able to do things successfully and this training develops one’s

professionalism in dealing with people. After the training, the trainee will be able to

handle situation properly and he/she will be able to know how to socialize well with

his/her colleagues. He/she will also be able to work well with everyone and he/she will

have a good teamwork. On-the-Job Training also enhances the critical thinking abilities

and discipline the student, conducting his training in a company. His/her ability to make

sound decision and evaluate pertinent factors will be improved.

Having a proper On-the-Job Training helps in the preparation of future

professionals for their future jobs. What the students learned on their On-the-Job

Training, even the little things, can be applied when they are already working. Students

will be trained not only academically but socially as well. The way they work and

communicate with other will not be a problem for them anymore. It also gives the trainee

the chance to immerse himself/herself in his chosen field and experience and learn the

skill necessary to the industry he/she interested in working with experienced staff, one

will be able to observe how the job is done properly.

Aside from working experience, On-the-Job Training allows the trainee to get

acquainted with real professionals and to meet people having different position in the

company, either high or low. The trainee will be able to know how to adjust to other

people’s personality and attitudes.

On-the-Job Training requires effort and seriousness. A trainee should take the On-

the-Job Training seriously as it can be a powerful tool for a person in preparing for the

next chapter of their life as a professional. It can possibly be a source of recommendation

when they take that big lift from being students to career professionals someday.

B. Objectives of the Training

At the end of the On-the-Job training the students are expected to:

1. Complete the 240 hours practicum requirement.

2. Developed their self-confidence.

NARRATIVE REPORTS OF EXPERIENCES

A. Daily Narrative Reports

June 25, 2019

This day was the beginning of my On- The- Job Training, I was assigned at the Municipal

Engineering Office of Diffun, Quirino. After we log in Engr. Jhomyr Sambrano took us to measure

the 700m canal project at Paredes, Diffun, Quirino me and Ms. Malto started measuring the canal

using the 100m tape measure there are no problems at the start we didn’t encounter any problems

but later on Ms. Pagaduan misread the tape measure so we go back at the place where Ms.

Pagaduan started to misread the tape measure and measure again then after we measure the canal

we go back in the Office Engr. Sambrano told us to layout the canal in the AutoCad, Ms. Pagaduan

and Ms. Malto did the AutoCad. In the afternoon we continue the layout of the canal in the

AutoCad.

June 26, 2019

This day Engr. Sibayan took us at the site of new municipal hall of Diffun, Quirino located

near at the back of Quirino State University Main Campus to observe the concreting of the road in

the site before we go to the site Engr. Sibayan instructed us to see if the form of the road is truly 9

inches deep so Engr. Sibayan bring us in the site then at the site Engr. Sibayan demonstrated what

are we going to do after he demonstrated he saw that the form is in good shape so he instructed us

to measure how many meters of cement mixture of one batch can distribute and calculate the
volume to get the quantity of portland cement. When the first batch arrived they immediately pour

it in the form then using the scraper a device with a motor attach on a four spring in long galvanized

steel producing vibration effect the laborers used it to spread the mixture then after they spread it

Engr. Sibayan told us to measure its length so me and Ms. Malto measured it then we calculate the

volume and the quantity of cement Engr. Sibayan said that we just stay at the site and measure

every batch and compare and then report to him. Therefor we stay at the site, upon observing we

noticed that the laborers are placing a flat steel on the mixture every 4.5 meter and we hear the

laborers called it a spander or spanner then the Ex-Municipal Engineer asked “Anong tawag

diyan?” so we answered it it’s called spanner and he said “Buti tinuturo sa inyo yan” and we just

laughed because it’s just our first time seeing that construction equipment. And we also observe

that the road has a cracked already so we asked the ex-municipal engineer and he said that that

cracked is caused by heat and it isn’t a problem if the cracked is vertical that is sure a problem but

if it’s horizontal that is due to heat he added. We continue observing and measuring in the afternoon

until they finish all the forms that are ready in concreting.

June 27, 2019

This day Engr. Sambrano took us to measure the length of the gutter of the road and the

canal near at the Municipal Engineering Office so we measured the said canal and gutter Ms.

Pagaduan and Ms. Malto measured the canal and gutter and I layout the road and canal in a coupon

band while measuring the road and canal a resident in the street go with us Mr. Gutierez talked to

resident the resident tells us about the accident caused by the waste of the construction of the canals

we asked if they already report it to Municipal Engineering Office he said that he already reported

the issue since im busy I left Mr. Gutierez and he continue talked to him after we measured it we

go back to office and report Engr. Somera instructed Engr. Sambrano to tell the OJT to sketch the
measured canal and road gutter since I’m the one who layout it I sketch it in sketchup and AutoCad.

In the afternoon Engr. Somera tell us to help in painting the stage in the Diffun Municipal Gym

for the preparation of Pammadayaw Festival of Diffun, Quirino therefor Engr. Sambrano took us

to the gym then we paint the stage and patch the hole on the stage.

June 28, 2019

This day we continue the painting of the stage and then after we finish the painting the two

girls was instructed by Engr. Fabro to take a picture on the Electrical of Birthing Center of Diffun,

Quirino and make an electrical layout plan of it so they went on the birthing center and took a

picture, when Mr. Gutierez and I went back to the office the two also went back after taking the

picture Mr. Gutierez and I rest for 15 mins and the two girls go inside the office and start doing

the Electrical Plan after we rest I went inside first and check what they are doing then I help I little

bit on the autocad and went outside to call Mr. Gutierez to go for lunch. In the afternoon Engr.

Somera called us to stay in the office because they will inspect in Lutuad Purok 2 so we continue

they electrical plan and make a perspective in the sketchup.

July 1, 2019

This day Engr. Sambrano took us in the municipal gym of diffun to help in the preparation

of talentadong buntis of diffun then after the preparation we go back to the office. Engr. Sibayan

order us to go in the concreting site of pavement to observe and measure the concreted pavement

to compute for the overall surface area of the concreted pavement for determining the Portland

cement. And for the afternoon we just continue observing the site.

July 3, 2019
This day Engr. Sambrano gave us two blueprint to estimate we decide to do it by two

members per plan me and Ms. Malto took one of the plan and start estimating and Mr. Gutierrez

and Ms. Pagaduan took the other one to estimate we estimate the plan for the whole day and

manage to finished the excavation, concrete works, masonry works, and a little in the steel works.

July 4, 2019

This day Engr. Somera and Engr. Sibayan order us to measure the whole proposed

pavement as built for the preparation of inspection next week so the for of us went to the site to

measure all the Pavement we don’t know the plan of the pavement so we asked the plan to the

laborers in examining the plan we notice that the plan is not match with the concreted pavement

so we asked the former municipal engineer and he said that some of the proposed site is a private

property so they change the route of the pavement first and continue the plan when the owner of

the property accept the proposal. Then we measure the pavement all day and report the measured

pavement.

July 5, 2019

This day me and Mr. Gutierrez was ordered by Engr. Sambrano to go to public market of

diffun to measure the canals at the side of the market for concreting of the surface therefore the

two of us measured the canals and sketch it after we measured the canals Engr. Sambrano told us

to call for the two ladies and go to banga banga he treated us a lomi and two kazalo after we eat

we went back to office and continue the estimate until five o’clock in the afternoon.

July 8, 2019

This day Engr. Sambrano told us to continue our estimate because they were busy so they

can’t entertain us. Ms. Malto and Ms. Pagaduan get the we continue estimating the plan me and
Ms. Malto started estimating the quantity of steel in the footings, column, roof beams, floor

beams, tie beams, lintel beam and slabs and quantity of tie wires we estimate all of this whole

day.

July 9, 2019

This day Engr. Sibayan brought us on the site to inspect the new constructed road in the

new site of municipal hall of diffun when we arrive at the site Engr. Sibayan instructed us to

measure the road pavement but me and Mr. Gutierez already measured the road pavement so we

told him that we already measured it then he ordered us to compute its area we computed its area

and check what is the area in the program of works of the project when we check it the computed

area on the site is greater than the area in the program Engr. Sibayan said that its good. We

continue inspecting the pavement and we observe that the last span of the pavement has a

longitudinal crack Engr. Sibayan inspected it and he said that the span should be repaired Engr.

Sibayan also noticed the asphalt patch are not properly placed after we finished the inspection we

went back in the office and continue the estimate.

July 10, 2019

This day Engr. Sibayan took us to measure a non concrete canal but when we went on the

site we cant measure because it is too wild so we went back on the office and we continue the

estimate Engr. Sambrano told us to finished first one plan because he will teach us to do a

detailed unit price analysis so we decided to finished first the plan that was given to Mr. Gutierez

and Ms. Pagaduan we divided the task me and Mr. Gutierez estimated the electrical roof trusses

and it’s accessories and Ms. Malto and Ms. Pagaduan estimated the plumbing.

July 11, 2019

This day we first finished the estimate and then we called Engr. Sambrano he gave us a

excel file and then we copied it he told us to bring out the estimate and then he started first we

analyze the excavation works he told us that there is no materials on the excavation and

backfilling but on the gravel bedding there is a material to be considered for the excavation and

back filling we only need the labor Engr. Sambrano computed first the number of days to

excavate the volume computed by dividing it by 1.5 cubic meter per day per person and then he

computed the price needed for the excavation and backfilling he said that it is our duty to

assigned the number of laborers to meet the computed value so we assigned the numbers of

laborers by trial and error to meet the amount. Engr. Sambrano didn’t continue to teach us he

was ordered by Engr. Somera to do something important.

July 12, 2019

This day me and Mr. Gutierez was took by Engr. Sibayan while Ms. Malto and Ms.

Pagaduan come with Engr. Fabro to inspect the evacuation area. Me and Mr. Gutierez went on

the site where the non concreted canal is located Engr. Sibayan coordinated to the barangay

captain of the barangay to lend us some help measuring the grassy canal the barangay kagawad

and tanod help us to measure the canal. When we finished measuring the canal Engr. Sibayan

sketch the canals and then we went back in the office.

July 15, 2019

This day MEO (Municipal Engineering Office of Diffun) and PPSD (PHYSICAL PLANT

AND SITE DEVELOPMENT of Quirino State University, Main Campus) combined to survey a

road from the back of QSU main campus to Cemetery of Diffun but due to bad weather we cant

survey using the instrument so our supervisor and the supervisor of PPSD decided to go for
stationing. We went on the site using a tape measure we station the road with an interval of 20

meters and mark it by white paint that day we only stationed about 380 meters because of bad

weather.

July 16, 2019

This day Engr. Sambrano and all of us the trainees went to the PPSD office for the survey

but the weather is not good then Engr. Pablo order us to compute for the elevation of their prior

survey of profile level of the road but the data they gave to us is a profile level using a transit we

are not familiar in a profile survey using a transit because our instructor only taught us a profile

level using a automatic level so we asked how to solve it Engr. Dennis the Director of PPSD

entertain us he asked us what is the formula in getting the elevation we said that we don’t know so

he write the formula on the field book but we notice that the formula he write was exactly the same

formula using the automatic level that was taught to us of our instructor in Surveying then we solve

it and then we plotted the solved elevation and we noticed that the graph is not match on the road

with our observation so we tell it to Engr. Dennis and he said that maybe the survey is not right so

he asked the engineer who surveyed the data and then the engineer told us to consider the angle

but we don’t know how to consider it so we asked him to give us an example but he smile at us

and then he left. The day was pass but the data is not yet solve.

July 17, 2019

This day PPSD went to maddela for inspection so we didn’t go in their office and because

of bad weather we didn’t also continue the stationing therefor we continue solving the data but our

supervisor is not also expert in surveying so he cant help us then the day pass and the is not yet

solve.
July 18, 2019

This day Engr. Sibayan , Engr. Sambrano, and Engr. Fabro tooks us in the new site of

municipal hall to measure the excavated area of road to compute for the volume of rock excavation

common rock is called for the ground soil and loose rock for the rock area we measure the area of

the loose rock and then we computed the volume of the excavation and gave it to Engr. Fabro. In

the afternoon Ma’am Juvy took us to measure a unconcreted canal in barangay bonifacio and

sketch it in autocad.

July 19, 2019

This day Engr. Sibayan said that the contractor is not contented on the computed volume and he

want to remeasure it so we waited for him to come and its 3 o’clock in the afternoon when the

contractor arrive at the office then we went in the site with the three engineer and the contractor

he showed us where the part of rock that we didn’t include in the computation so the three

engineers resketch the area to be computed and gave it to us Ms. Malto used autocad to compute

its area then she recomputed the volume.

July 22, 2019

This day Engr. Fabro took Ms. Malto and Ms. Pagaduan to inspect the evacuation center

that is under construction while I and Mr. Gutierez are busy making the perspective of the plan

that we are estimating but Engr. Sambrano needs some help so Mr. Gutierez go with him I did go

out with them because Engr. Sambrano said that he only need one so I just continue what we’re

doing and that’s for this day.

July 23, 2019

This day PPSD and MEO combined to survey the level of the road from bonifacio to

paredes cemetery engineers from PPSD and OJT took the tape measure and they stationed the road

every 20 meters while Engr. Pablo, Engr. Opiano and Engr. Sambrano took us to survey the level

Ms. Pagaduan is the recorder and Mr. Aldrin and I are rodman Engr. Pablo set up the instrument

and take shot from a Benchmark and then he started taking shot the center line of the station 0+00

the beginning of the survey then the edge of the existing PCCP both left and right then the 2 meters

extension of the existing PCCP Engr. Pablo take shot every station until the instrument can’t reach

or read the Stadia Rod so Engr. Pablo shot a turning point and then he set up the instrument where

he take shot or read the stadia rod we continue surveying the road in the afternoon and then when

the engineers decided to stop Engr. Opiano teach us to set up the instrument in the fastest and

therefore we learned how to setup the instrument in the fastest way.

July 24, 2019

This day we continue surveying the road without the help of the PPSD because Engr. Pablo

is not present this day so Engr. Sambrano decided to continue the survey with our own first Engr.

Sambrano setup the instrument but he struggle in setting up the instrument because he said that his

not expert in surveying Ms. Pagaduan took over setting up the instrument and me and Mr. Gutierez

are the rodman so we start taking the backsite of the last reading made by Engr. Pablo and then

take shot the next station Ms. Pagaduan asked me to take the reading I take the read every station

until we finish all the station and then we established a new benchmark at the end of the survey

and then went to the office to take a rest and to log out.

July 25, 2019

This day we computed all the elevation of the road by assuming the elevation of BM

(Benchmark) of 100 meter from the datum line we computed the elevation in relation with the

elevation of the BM after we calculated the elevation me and Mr. Gutierez plot the Profile level of

centerline of the existing PCCP and finish it through the whole day.

July 26, 2019

This day we plotted the cross-section of the road every station we didn’t finish plotting

because some of the data made by Engr. Pablo are not understandable so we just do our thing made

ourselves busy I start making a plan in the sketchup while the other made themselves busy.

July 29, 2019

This day we continue plotting the cross-section of the road we survey we decided to divide

the work individual to do it faster we struggle plotting some of the cross-section because of the

plotting sheet it’s too small in AutoCAD. We finished plotting the cross-section through the whole

day.

July 30, 2019

This day Engr. Sambrano order us to compute the cut and fill area of the road and then

compute its volume we then started computing we divided the work individually to finish it faster

but it’s not easy because we don’t know how to compute it so we asked the engineers how to

compute the cut and fill when they demonstrated how to solve they let us finished the computation

we do it the computation all day.

July 31, 2019

This day Engr. Sibayan took us to San Isidro, diffun and Magsaysay, Diffun to inspect the

constructed road first we went to San Isidro we measured the actual road the length, thickness and

width of the road and compare it to the program of works made by the engineering aide of MEO

and made a report then after that we went in the next site to barangay Magsaysay we measured the

road as we measured the road in San Isidro and made a report from the findings the POW of the

road in Magsaysay is not matched in the actual because of the decision of the barangay captain so

MEO decided to make a variation order of that road or reprogrammed it that is we did this day.

August 1, 2019

This day Engr. Sambrano and Engr. Somera brought us in a certain street of barangay

bonifacio diffun to survey the level of canal and road for the construction of the new canal and in

the afternoon we computed the elevation each station 20 meters apart based on the benchmark we

make in our last survey and then we plotted the elevation and pass it to Engr. Sambrano.

August 2, 2019

This day in the morning Engr. Somera order us to make a design grade line for the canal

that we survey last August 1 2019 then me and Mr. Gutierrez make the grade line of the canal we

are interrupted when they told us to go to evacuation center of diffun to clean it then in the

afternoon we continued what we left in the morning.

Narrative on Construction Site Visits

200 m-Newly Constructed Canal at Paredes, Diffun, Quirino

June 25, 2019

This site visit is the first task given to us in MEO we accompanied Engr. Sambrano at Paredes,

Diffun, Quirino to visit the newly constructed canal at the side of the Farm to market road. I was

nervous that day because it is my first time to work in a Municipal Engineering Office I don’t

know what task will they gave to us then in our very first task Engr. Somera the Municipal

Engineer of Diffun, Quirino ordered us to go along with Engr. Sambrano to visit a newly

constructed canal so we accompany him and at the site we thought that we will just visit the canal

but Engr. Sambrano order us to measure the length, width, and depth of the canal and compare it

to the proposed plan and that day we learned that the difference between the drawing plan from

the actual canal is very quiet different the actual canal didn’t matched at all in the proposed one so

we asked Engr. Sambrano why he said that there is a instances where the barangay urgently

requesting for a program of canal then Municipal Engineering Offices will visit the site then with

just observing the site they will issue a program of works and gave it to the contractor then the

contractor will construct the canal that was program by the MEO upon constructing the canal will

arise a certain problem on the terrain of the site the contractor will make an adjustment on the plan

and report to MEO to issue a variance order in the program of works of the canal.
Concreting Circumferential at Bonifacio, Diffun Quirino

June 26, 2019

Road construction is a very systematic type of construction wherein the wild terrain will became

a finely concreted road. In this site visit we witness the process of concreting a road pavement

Engr. Sibayan took us in the circumferential at Bonifacio, Diffun, Quirino that day is the pouring

of concrete in the road forms that was setup by the contractors, Engr. Sibayan told us that the

thickness of the road pavement required by the municipal engineering office is 9 inches deep or

23 cm thick then before pouring the concrete Engr. Sibayan order us to check thickness of the

forms setup if it is truly 9 inches when we measured the thickness its more or less 9 inches so

Engr. Sibayan order to pour the first batch of concrete when the concrete was poured the laborers

immediately took the scrapper a device use in distributing the concrete mixture easily after that

they flatten the concrete and every 4.5 meters the laborers are placing a plate to cut the concrete

mixture like a bricks called spanner and they repeated the process until the last batch of concrete

mixture prepared for that day.

Newly constructed barangay road at san isidro diffun quirino

It is a great experience for me to participate for the inspection process of a project in which

my knowledge and expectations in civil engineering works are enlightened. It’s nice to be deployed

in the municipal engineering office of diffun, quirino because I and my co-trainees was exposed

in really great experience prior to our profession.

This day me and my co-trainees together with Engr. Sibayan and Engr. Emil Dy the

contractor went to San Isidro, Diffun, Quirino to visit and inspect the newly constructed barangay

road to see if the contractor really built the road based on the program of works of the road as we

arrive in the site Engr. Sibayan order us to measure the properties of the road the thickness, length,

and the width of the and then we computed the volume of concrete poured in the site and we

compared it in the program of works of the road.

Barangay road at Magsaysay, diffun, quirino

Being a construction contractor is not a joke because there are times that your decision

making and position are being challenge by the client especially in government projects. What will

you choose the request of the barangay or the program of works given to you by the MEO?

In this site visit with the same contractor Engr. Emil Dy together with Engr. Sibayan me

and my co-trainees went all the way to barangay Magsaysay, Diffun, Quirino to inspect the

barangay road constructed by Engr. Emil Dy. On our way Engr. Dy are already discussing the road

to the inpecting engineer Engr. Sibayan about what he did in the road he said that because of the

request of the barangay captain of the barangay Magsaysay requesting to make the length of the

road that is being built the contractor said that he can’t change what is program because of the

budget per barangay is only 200,000 so he suggested that he will just adjust the thickness of the

road to 6 inches to make the length longer. When we arrive in the site we immediately measured

the thickness, length and width of the road the volume computed was a little bit short but the

contractor said that the extra gravel was went to the embankment. When we go back at the MEO

we reported the inspection and they said that they will just issue a variance order.

It is not bad to decline a request of client if it’s not right but you can always consider it and

come up with another solution in which the two party will be benefits.
Evacuation Center of Diffun, Quirino

Construction of building should be manage properly to not only in the construction but also

in managing the waste in the construction a constructor should clean all the waste produce in the

construction after work.

In this site visit Engr. Fabro took us in the newly constructed evacuation center of Diffun,

Quirino located near at the municipal gymnasium of diffun because Municipal Engineer Somera

order Engr. Fabro to get all the trainees to clean the newly constructed building but when arrive at

the site we were surprise because we didn’t expect the volume of the construction waste. The

wasted cement on the floor and wasted different construction materials was all over the place we

struggle cleaning it because it’s too dusty then Engr. Fabro advices us if we are going to construct

a building we should clean it daily after work of weekly to prevent the problem like this. Even we

didn’t see the actual construction of the building we learned a lot that day with only just cleaning

the building.

Every work we do even it is a matter of cleaning there was a learning that we can get so

keep working and at the same we need to learn something.

CHAPTER IV

INSIGHTS GAINED, PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED, RECOMMENDATION

A. Insights Gained

On-the-Job Training is very important not only to teach students for their chosen

career but to show the reality of working. In almost seven weeks of staying in MEO-Diffun,

I was nurtured through different experiences that made me aware of what really

engineering is. . Our training supervisors taught us different ways to be strategic in

imparting our skills in this field. . I was able to enhance my skills in estimating, surveying,

imagining the actual figure of structures, decision-making, plotting, and of course the

essence of socialization towards work.

Being deployed at MEO- Diffun, I was given the opportunity to expose myself to

the different terminologies, structures, and works of Civil Engineering which was new to

me wherein the only knowledge that I have about Civil Engineering are the theories being

taught to us by our instructor. The reality of being a professional is revealed during this

training.

In my two hundred forty hours for OJT at MEO-Diffun, I gained a lot of valuable

knowledge that could help me in the future. This knowledge developed me to become a

better individual and most of all to be a better and responsible future Civil Engineer.

B. Problems Encountered

For the whole duration of the On-the-Job Training (OJT), the following problems were

encountered:

1. Unfamiliarity to different Engineering terminologies which causes errors in doing

a certain task like reading and estimating plans.

2. Problems on visualizing the plan

C. Recommendation
1. Site visits related to the course matters to expose the students to engineering

fieldworks. To develop the ability on visualizing the structure in the plan of the

students.

2. Training and Seminars
