OFFICE MEMORANDUM

- - - Sub: - Kdoption of GeO:Composites i n c onstruct io n OfREwalis as replacemEmt of Filter

Media - Strict Quality Assurance regarding

It has been observed that as per the new methodology being adopted in accordance with
various IRC guidelines such as clause no. 1.6 of IRC: SP 59 - 2002 (Guidelines for use of
Geotextiles in Road Pavements & Associated Works), the Contractors I Concessionaires are using
Geo-Composite as replacement of Filter Media to take care of drainage along the whole length,
while construction of RE walls.

2. As the above methodology being adopted using Geo-Composites is a replacement of 600

mm wide filter media consisting of well graded crushed aggregates for proper exit of entrapped
water, it throws severe challenges in Quality Assurance during the construction as the
compaction level near the edges and corners of RE wall panels is difficult to achieve. If desired
compaction is not done properly then it may result in to subsidence of approaches at the edges.
The similar issues have been also observed in approaches of Underpasses, Culverts, and Bridges
etc. where compaction level is not adequate, due to insufficient edge compaction, resulting into
bumping ride .

3. Hence, all the ROs & PDs are advised that while adopting such methodologies, it shall be
ensured that the Team Leader of lEI AEI SC should ensure proper compaction and shall attend
the RFls for the same and concerned PD shall include this item in the mandatory checking of the
prescribed test! check measurements, so that settlement of the pavement may be avoided at
such critical locations and smooth riding quality is ensured at the approaches of Bridgesl
Culvertsl Flyoversl Underpasses etc.

This is issued with the approval of Competent Authority. A
