DESIGN OF RIVETED JOINT

The permanent fastenings are those fastenings which can not be disassembled
without destroying the connecting components.

welded and riveted joints

The temporary or detachable fastenings are those fastenings which can be

disassembled without destroying the connecting components.

Screwed, keys, pins

Methods of Riveting

For steel rivets

<= Ф12 mm (cold riveting)

> Ф12 mm (hot riveting)

In case of long rivets, only the

tail is heated and not the whole
shank.
DESIGN OF RIVETED JOINT
Material of Rivets

The material of the rivets must be tough and ductile

Low carbon steel, brass, aluminium or copper

but when strength and a fluid tight joint is the main consideration,
then the steel rivets are used.

DESIGN OF RIVETED JOINT
Efficiency of a Riveted Joint

The efficiency of a riveted joint is defined as the ratio of the strength of

riveted joint to the strength of the un-riveted or solid plate.

Strength of the riveted joint = Least of Pt , Ps and Pc

Strength of the un-riveted or solid plate per pitch length

DESIGN OF RIVETED JOINT
CALCULATION OF RIVET DIA AND PITCH

Diameter of the Rivet

The diameter of the rivet hole (d) may be determined by using Unwin’s formula;

t > 8 mm t = thickness of plate

But if the thickness of plate is less than 8 mm, then the diameter of the
rivet hole may be calculated by equating the shearing resistance of the
rivets to crushing resistance. In no case, the diameter of rivet hole should
not be less than the thickness of the plate.

CALCULATION OF RIVET DIA AND PITCH
Diameter of the Rivet ( t < = 8 mm )
For an ideal joint the rivet should be equally strong against
shearing and crushing;

DESIGN OF RIVETED JOINT
Example # 1:

Design a riveted joint for two plates having 5.5 mm thickness:

• Triple riveted lap joint
• Double riveted double cover butt joint
The values of stress are given below.
Plates (Plain Carbon Steel) with σy = 500MPa
Rivets (Mild Steel) with σy = 450MPa

Also find the efficiency of both joints and determine which one of
two joints has higher strength.
DESIGN OF RIVETED JOINT
Example # 2:

A double riveted lap joint is made between 15 mm thick plates.

The rivet diameter and pitch are 25 mm and 75 mm respectively.
If the ultimate stresses are 400 MPa in tension for plate and 320
MPa in shear and 640 MPa in crushing for rivet material, find
the minimum force per pitch length which will rupture the joint.

If the above joint is subjected to a load such that the factor of safety
is 4, find out the actual stresses developed in the plates and the
rivets.
DESIGN OF RIVETED JOINT
Example # 3:

Find the efficiency of the following riveted joints :

1. Single riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter
rivets having a pitch of 50 mm.
2. Double riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter
rivets having a pitch of 65 mm.

Assume
Permissible tensile stress in plate = 120 MPa
Permissible shearing stress in rivets = 90 MPa
Permissible crushing stress in rivets = 180 MPa
