Android Application of Library Resource Access Information and Data Analysis

The document presents a thesis for developing an Android mobile application to provide access to Taguig City University library resources and information. The application aims to make all relevant library data available through mobile devices, including catalog searches, book details, events, maps, guides and user accounts. It seeks to improve users' experience by consolidating key library features and content in a single mobile application. The scope covers core functions like searching, viewing results, guides and saved items. Limitations include some information not being viewable through the app. The goal is to create a simple and user-friendly mobile solution for TCU library patrons.

CHAPTER 1

1.0 Introduction

Since the invention of telephone in the late 18th century, the invention of

telephone in the field of Telecommunications had numerous major advances in

modulation techniques, coding, information theory etc. As the communication

theory grew, the newer telephones shed the need to be connected by wires and

mobile telephones were born. This 21st century mobile telephones allowed users

to make phone calls from anywhere, as long as they are in the radio coverage of

their base stations and able to maintain an active link (commonly referred to as

cells). However, these mobile phones were incapable of doing anything other

than making phone calls and storing the user’s contact list.

With the explosive growth of the World Wide Web, the people’s need to be

connected to the Internet all the time increased and these devices proved to be

extremely restrictive. As the variety of such needs increased, the new breed of

smart devices was needed that had capabilities to run customized and

specialized applications to fulfill a user’s computing and connectivity needs.

These new devices were called Smartphones. With time, the smartphone

matured to be a small computer on which the mobile telephone was also nothing

but one of many other applications. They featured music players, camera,

photo/video surfing programs, games, etc., as other possible applications. These

smart phones are low powered, energy constrained computers which required a

light-weight but highly efficient operating system to run all of a user’s

applications.

1.1 Background of the Study

With traditional computers and Mobile are converge, there are new smart

devices that capable of running customized application have been on the rise.

According to Statista.com by the year 2019 to 2020 the number of smartphone

user’s in the Philippines is estimated to reach 75.6 million. This would mean that

around 42 percent of the population in the Philippines would use a smartphone.

This number is expected to rise to 50 percent by the year 2023. An increasing

number of people use their smart phones to connect with others, to conduct e-

commerce transactions, including libraries, to embrace this new mode of

information dissemination. Due to a variety reasons, people prefer to use their

mobile smart phone to get information about their library, browse the catalog

listing, check a books availability status, itd location, etc. This thesis is an attempt

to provide a mobile application solution for the Taguig City University’s library

resources.

This project was to create an Android application for the TCU Library that

has all the features that a user would often use when he/she visits the library

website. It is a one-stop solution for retrieving all the library related information,
news, events, floor-byfloor maps, etc. Catalog search and

research/course/subject guides are two of the application’s primary features. The

application allows a user to search in the library’s catalog (Books & Media) based

on the entered keywords. Bibliographic information of any particular book/e-book,

along with its status (location, call number and availability) is provided for each of

the search results. The application uses the WorldCat Search API in the back-

end to retrieve these results. With the library departmental information, staff

details, and the ability to save the users selected search results, this application

makes all the TCU library related information available at one’s fingertips.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

1.2.1 General Objective

The general objective of this study is to develop a simple and user-friendly

Android Mobile application that would help the students of Taguig City University

to access any library related information and quickly browse through the

catalogs. The functional requirements chosen for developing the application were

based on the frequency/number of visits the users made to a particular page in

the main library website. Google Analytics was used to get this information.
1.3 Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope and limitations will specify the capabilities of the Android

Application can and cannot provide.

Scope:

 The application has the provision for a catalog search based on keyword.

 Can display results based on the search criteria entered.

 The ability to provide bibliographic and status information about any library

element (book or a media item).

 It can provide library specific information such as news, planned events

and hours of operation, departments’ information, staff information, and

floor-byfloor maps in the library.

 Has a provision for viewing various resource guides. They should be

categorized by the course guides, subject guides and guides by the type

of information.

 Provides separate options for accessing MyAccount and Create/Reset

Pin. Any TCU member should be able to access their account and/or

change their library pin from the application.

 Can able to save the location and call reference information of any catalog

item.

 Can provide a feature for “Follow Us”. This link should provide information about

the TCU library via social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter.
Limitations:

 Couldn’t view some important information of the TCU Library.
