Project Topic

The document discusses a student's selected topic on the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) and its work in environmental protection. The BNHS is an Indian wildlife research organization established in 1883 with a mission of nature conservation. It operates research and training centers across India and maintains a natural history museum. The student explains that they chose this topic because of their interest in environmental issues like global warming, pollution, and species extinction. The BNHS conducts research on species and habitats, provides environmental education and awareness programs, and collaborates with other organizations on conservation projects.

PROJECT TOPIC: Study the role of any one national / international

organization mentioned in the book and write about the work done by that
organization in environment protection.

1) Selection of the topic:-

I have selected BNHS as an organization working in the area of environment

conservation. The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), a pan-India wildlife
research organization, has been promoting the cause of nature conservation
since 1883. Its headquarter is in Mumbai and has one regional centre at
Wetland Research and Training Centre, near Chilika Lake, Odisha. The BNHS
specializes in the conservation of nature and natural resources as well as
organizing education activities and exploration of natural history. Interesting
specimens are exhibited in the Bombay Natural History Museum (BNHS).
Naturalists, ornithologists and other qualified scientists within the country and
all over the world, make visits to this museum in order to conduct their
researches and observations.

The reason why I have selected this topic is I feel strongly about environement
protection. Not only I am a great lover of nature but also a loverof human race.
That means I am cocerned about the dangers hovering over the mankind and
the environment viz. Global warming, pollution , species extinction,
deforestation, mangrove destruction etc. The more we exploit and destroy our
environment, the more ecological imbalance we create; ultimately putting the
very human existence at risk.

Every species is dependent on other species for survival, be it directly or

indirectly. Human beings are the ones who depend on maximum number of
species for their survival and theirother needs . Any threat to ecology means a
direct threat to human race. Due to man induced natural disaster will lead to
ecological imbalance and environmental degradation for which we cannot
forgive ourselves.

A reason for selecting BNHS as a organization is I have in the past visited one of
their exhibitions held in town . It was a well organized exhibit of photographs ,
postcards of various flora and fauna . Some rare specimens were also kept
there . I was amazed by their collection.
2) Objectives :-

 To understand the importance of environment protection

 To study the role of agencies involved in environment conservation
 To sensitize people towards protection of plant and animal species

3) Awarenesss about the topic:-

Environmental protection can be defined as the prevention of unwanted

changes to ecosystems and their constituent parts. The objective of protection
is to ensure the maintenance of a stock of renewable resources that is being
exploited for human purposes.

The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) since its inception in 1883 has
been involved in the study of flora and fauna of the Indian subcontinent. What
started as just a monthly meeting of eight naturalists to exchange notes,
exhibit interesting specimens and otherwise encourage each other in the field
of natural history in 1883 has slowly become one of the finest collections of
natural history in Asia. Currently the BNHS collection is one of the finest
natural history collections in Asia having 1,20,000 faunal specimens. The logo
of BNHS is inspired from the great hornbill named William.

Main Functions

BNHS works closely with its stakeholders (government, academia, corporate,

research institutes and general public) to continue its conservation mission.
Some of its major functions are given below:

Natural History Collection

Conduct research on various species and habitats

Conservation of seascapes and landscapes

Provide information related to the environment to researchers, academicians,

scientists, etc.

Wildlife Publications

Extensive awareness programs through education, Communication

Cooperate with international agencies on various conservations projects and

issues
4) Relevance of the topic :

In recent decades, many environmental problems have increased as the result

of human activities and unplanned management of the technological
development those interference ecosystems. It is critical to protect the
environment so as to reduce the destruction of eco-systems. Air and water
pollution, global warming, smog, acid rain, deforestation, wildfires are just few
of the environmental issues that we are facing right now. It is everyone’s
responsibility to take care of the environment to make this planet a wonderful
place to live and also ensuring we leave a healthy planet for the next
generation.

Our forests remove carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the air we
breathe and also cool our air temperatures, reducing the formation of ground-
level ozone, a pollutant that can cause heart and lung problems to worsen; our
wetlands store storm water and recharge our aquifers (where most of us get
our drinking water) with these filtered waters; and the dune systems on our
beaches form natural barriers to storm waves and provide important habitat
and travel ways for wildlife.

Environmental protection should be implemented due to warm climate

changes and flood which heighten the risks of spread out pests and vector
diseases. Some infectious diseases such as malaria, dengue, cholera and
encephalitis can also spread out rapidly throughout the whole area by
mosquitoes, flies and other insects those usually adapt to live in warm weather
region.

Take for example : The recent case of Aarey tree cutting . Mumbai's Aarey
Colony is a green belt in suburban Goregaon that has more than five lakh trees
and is home to a wide variety of bird and animal species as well as 27 tribal
villages. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) cut down 2,141
trees in Aarey Colony hours before the Supreme Court ordered a stay on
further cutting till its next hearing on October 21. The top court's ruling came
after the Maharashtra government said it had already cut down the trees it
needed to for its plan to clear 33 hectares of Aarey land for the construction of
a Metro car shed and depot. This was done hours later after the Bombay High
Court cancelled four petitions seeking to declare the area a forest. This
resulted in precious part of ecosystem being lost to greedy mankind needs.
Environmental Conservation is important because when we protect the
environment, we are not protecting some distant entity but ourselves. Right to
Life and Right against Exploitation are Fundamental Rights of all organisms
dwelling on Earth. A clean environment is essential for healthy living. The
biggest reason of all to save environment is because we are part of the
environment. We are not some separate entity to it, what affects the
environment affects us all.

We live in the environment and the environment sustains us. We are the
environment!
5) Review of Literature:

A literature review is a text of a scholarly paper. Literature reviews provide you

with a handy guide to a particular topic. If you have limited time to conduct
research, literature reviews can give you an overview or act as a stepping
stone. For professionals, they are useful reports that keep them up to date
with what is current in the field. For scholars, the depth and breadth of the
literature review emphasizes the credibility of the writer in his or her field.
Literature reviews also provide a solid background for a research paper’s
investigation.

A study on Non-Governmental Organization’s (NGO’s) in Protecting The

Environment

“World today is economically richer & environmentally poorer the ever” - By R

Brown, President of World Watch Institute, Washington

The Consequences of the Environmental pollution are not hard to

comprehend, whereas the solution to ending environmental pollution is not
easy to come by this is an unending complex and intricate debate and may be
single solution, however attempts can always be made to find out solution to
specific problems keeping in view the technological solutions legal parameters
and judicial pronouncements & the role of NGO’s has a very important to
protection of environment through social services. The NGO’s from past five
decades have witnessed the difficult problems encountered in providing health
care services to our poor people; spread the awareness to public protection of
wildlife, forest, human right, Women and Children etc.

“A non-governmental organization’s (NGO’s) is any non-profit, voluntary

citizens’ groups which is organized on a local, national or international level.
Task orientated and driven by people with a commoninterest, NGOs perform a
variety of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizens concerns to the
government, advocate and monitor policies and encourage political
participation through provisions of information. Some are organized around
specific issues, such as human rights, environment or health.
