“#HATAWSA50”

The past 50th Founding Anniversary or should I say, The Golden Year of our beloved
school; Bicol University is an unforgettable experience for us sophomores. It has also a
common name which is “BU WEEK”. A week that is full of excitement and fun. It
includes events like sports, arts, literary, singing and dancing competitions. But there is
an event that is considered as a tradition for BUeños every “BU WEEK”, it is known as,
“HATAW”.
“HATAW” is a dance performance every opening of the “BU WEEK” to show
organization and camaraderie of every BUeño. It takes two weeks of our time to prepare
on “HATAW”. Despite of busy schedule caused by the other subjects, it must be done
for honor and as a sort of grade on physical education subject.

In the preparation, we are engaged in dance rehearsals even some are not good in
dancing which takes three hours every session. But, we have only two sessions so, its
not a burden. Another is buying of materials for our props such as metallic papers for
pompoms and balloons and party poppers for decorations.
The day before the opening of the “BU WEEK”, preparation was still on going. One of
the preparations is the General Rehearsal of “HATAW” in Albay Sports Complex which
is the performing place. It’s very hard for us to practice in the middle of the Oval wherein
the direct heat of sunlight is present. But because of the grade in physical education
and beautiful freshies around, we are motivated. It takes eight hours to master the
preparations.
September 18, 2018 is the most awaited date of Bicol University as it was the start of its
49th Founding anniversary. The opening of the event starts with a parade starting at
Peñaranda Park to Albay Sports Complex. All Bicol University Colleges, Departments
and Personnel, included in the parade to showcase how proud we are to be a BUeño.
When we arrived at the Albay Sports Complex, we are warmly welcomed by guests,
speakers, faculties, staffs, officers and specially by the Bicol University President, Mr.
Arnulfo Mascariñas. The President gave an opening message to express his gratitude
and happiness to everyone who is part of the event.
After his message at approximately 6:30 p.m., “Hataw” finally began. Lights are all
opened as the moon already rises. Cameras and flashes are all set to record and
capture the most unforgettable tradition of “BU WEEK.” We go all out in dancing at the
Oval even it was raining to give importance in the tradition and for the sake of our grade
in P.E. The “Hataw” is about fifteen minutes in total.
After the “HATAW”, we stay a little longer and take selfies and groupies to keep the
memories for ourselves to upload it in social networking sites like facebook, Instagram,
twitter etc. Because we are exhausted, we have a great eating and sleeping that day.
