ITMATHERS

This document contains 10 math word problems about arithmetic sequences and series. It provides the formulas to calculate terms in an arithmetic sequence as an = a1 + (n - 1)d and the sum of terms in an arithmetic series as Sn = n(a1 + an)/2. For each problem, it states the given information, applies the formulas, shows the work, and states the answer. The problems cover topics such as total sales over multiple years, distance traveled at a constant rate, amounts earned with fixed increases, and finding total values when given initial terms of sequences.

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCES
1 AND SERIES

Arithmetic Sequence is a sequence of numbers such that the difference of any two successive
members of the sequence is a constant

In other words, we just add the same value each time ... infinitely.

1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, ...

This sequence has a difference of 3 between each number.

We can write an Arithmetic Sequence as a rule: (F O R M U L A)

an = a1 + (n - 1)d

Arithmetic Series is the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence.

Formula: or

The first term is a1, the common difference is d, and the number of terms is n. The sum of an arithmetic series
is found by multiplying the number of terms times the average of the first and last terms. The series created
by adding the first five terms of the sequence in the previous example can be found using another
method called subscript notation.

To find the sum of terms in an arithmetic sequence, use the following formula.

In this formula:
Sn is the sum of the first n terms in a sequence
n is the number of terms you are adding up
a1 is the first term of the sequence
an is the nth term of the sequence
The nth term is found by using the explicit formula for the sequence. So if you are not given
the explicit formula, you will need to find it before you can find the sum.

Geometric Sequence is a sequence of numbers that follows a pattern were the next term is found by
multiplying by a constant called the common ratio, R.

:
GEOMETRIC FORMULA 𝒂𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 (𝒓)𝒏−𝟏

4th Term (
2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, ...
2nd Term

Example:
This sequence has a factor of 2 between each number.

Each term (except the first term) is found by multiplying the previous term by 2.

To fin the Common Ratio (r) , Just Divide any term from one that follows:
