Chapter 10 Manufacturing Engineering

This document discusses manufacturing engineering topics including basic metal cutting operations, shop safety, speeds and feeds for machining, traditional machining operations like turning, milling and drilling, calculating cutting speeds and feed rates, and using statistical methods to control manufacturing processes. Safety is emphasized, including wearing eye protection, avoiding loose clothing near machinery, and not working alone. Metal cutting, milling and turning operations are covered at a basic level.

Speeds And Feeds Are Like Biting
And Chewing
Speed: how fast the cutting
tool (or part) spins
Feed Rate: how hast the
part is advanced into the
part

Recommended Cutting Speeds

Calculating The Cutting RPM
Same equation for drill press, mill, and lathe

3.82 * CS
RPM =
Dia
Where RPM = revolutions per minute for the cutting tool
(mill and drill) or work piece (lathe)
CS = cutting speed in surface feet per minute
Dia = diameter in inches for the cutting tool (mill
and drill) or work piece (lathe)

The Feed Rate For Milling
FEED = ( RPM ) * (chip _ load ) * (# _ of _ cutter _ teeth)
Chip load values are
found in tables (check

We will use 0.003 IPT

Summary
Manufacturing is the process of converting (either by
manual labor or by machines) raw materials into
finished products, especially in large quantities.
Manufactured goods are everywhere - aircraft,
bicycles, electronics, coat hangers, automobiles,
refrigerators, toys, clothing, cans, bottles, cell phones,
and so on.
Statistical methods are important for the control of
processes. Manufacturing processes are not exactly on
specification but have a scatter about their mean.
