Chapter III

This document outlines the research procedures for a study on the effects of eggshell compost fertilizer on okra plant growth. It describes the independent variable as different amounts of eggshell compost fertilizer (0g, 20g, 30g, 50g) applied to okra plants. The dependent variable is okra plant growth and yield. Control variables are direct sunlight. The study uses a complete randomized design with 4 treatments and data will be collected every 7 days over 3 months. The document details the steps for making the compost fertilizer, planting and maintaining the okra plants, collecting data through observation and documentation, and analyzing the data quantitatively.

RESEARCH PROCEDURE

3.1 Operational Definition

These are the definition from this research objects that already presented on
the previous chapter.
1) Okra plant ( Abelmoschus esculentus )
Okra is one type of functional vegetables that usually grow in tropical and
subtropical area which contain of many good nutrient that effect he health
of human body and prevent a various desease .
2) Compost fertilizer
Compost fertilizer is a kind of organic fertilizer that made from made from
an organic material that can be recycled and it use for helping plant growth
as plant nutrient, repairing soil structure, increase water and soil bonding.
3) Eggshell
Eggshell is an outer part of an egg that has a hard texture that contain with
around 94% of calcium carbonate and other material that can use for several
benefit. One of it, as compost fertilizer.
3.2 Research Variable
1) Dependant variables
Dependent variable is what we measure a variable that effected or variables
whose existence is influenced by other variables (Widiyanto, 2013). In this
research the dependant variable is the effect that happen in okra plant from
the usage of eggshell as compost fertilizer.
2) Independant variables
The variables that make changes to the dependent variable (Zulfikar, 2016).
Independent variable from this research is the compost fertilizer that made
from eggshell which will be applied to okra plants.
3) Control variables
The variable that make a relation from independant variable and dependant
variable without affecting the research of dependant variable so the
dependent variable is not influenced by external factors not examined
(Variable theory by Sugiyono, 2011 60:64). Control variables from this
research is the direct sunlight to okra plant.
3.3 Research Method
The method used in this research is experimental method, by experimenting
the application of eggshell as compost fertilizer to growth and yield of okra
plant with sampling method that according from completed randomize design
technique. Completed randomized design is the simpliest type of basic design,
or can be defined as experimental units completely at random which is that the
design is completely flexible, and any number of treatments and units per
treatment may be use randomly. In this research will be use 4 growth media
observes, by 4 plant media with 4 type treatment. The treatment is.

P0 = Without compost fertilizer.

P1 = The usage of compost fertilizer (50 grams/polybag).
P2 = The usage of compost fertilizer (30 grams/polybag).
P3 = The usage of compost fertilizer (20 grams/polybag).

This research will be done in 3 months with data collection every one week
or 7 days.

3.4 Time and place of research

The research will take place in SMA PLUS NEGERI 17 Palembang and
this research will take as long as 3 months and will begin in January – March
2020.
3.5 Object of the study

3.5.1 Tools and Material

The tools and materials that must be used before conducting a complete
randomized experiment to find out the effect of the egg shell as compost for the
growth of okra plant.

1. Polybag 35 x 40 cm, as placement tool.

2. Shovel, to help on planting.
3. Blender, as mixer/crusher tool.
4. Basin, as placement tool.
5. Bucket, as placement tool.
6. Eggshell ½ kilogram, as the material in the mixture.
7. Okra seeds, as the material on planting.
8. Soil, as the material on planting.
9. Water, as the material on planting and mixture.

3.5.2 The Procedure of Making Compost Fertilizer from Eggshell

These are the procedure to make a compost fertilizer from eggshell.

1. Preparing the tools and material for research.

2. Wash the tools before using.
3. fill the basin with water.
4. Put the eggshell into the basin and leave it overnight.
5. After a full night, the next morning wash the eggshell thoroughly. Use a
brush or scrubber to simplify the washing process, don't forget to use clean
water and rinse the immersion water to make it cleaner.
6. After cleaning, dry the egg shell for 1 day to dry completely.
7. After drying, put it in a bucket and store it while you prepare the equipment.
8. Insert the dried and clean eggshell into a blender until it has flour
texture/powder.
9. After the eggshells really look like flour, put them in used plastic bottle and
dont forget to leaving a little space at the top, cover tightly and add plastic
to prevent air from escaping.
10. Leave it for a day.
11. Then, it can be use as a fertilizer with just by sprinkle it on the planting
media of your plants evenly or mix it with the soil when you want to plant
crops.

3.5.3 Weighing Planting Media

This research will using completed randomized design (CRD) technique and
for weighing of planting can be seen from 4 growth media observers , 4 planting
media with 4 types of treatment is as follows.
Tabel 3.1 Growth Media Observation.

Source Treatment
Variety P1 P2 P3 P4
Compost - 50 gram/ 30 gram/ 20 gram/
fertilizer polybag polybag polybag
Note : Each of polybag has a same amount of soil.

3.5.4 Planting Dependent Variable (Okra Plant)

In this research on planting okra, there are several things that must be done
such as selecting seeds, seeding and transferring plants to the planting media.

1) Selecting seeds
okra seeds that used are okra seeds obtained from okra seeds that are old
and have blackened color then the seeds are soaked for 4-6 hours, seeds that
are submerged during immersion are selected.
2) Planting seed
Okra seeds is planted directly into the field by immersing 2-3 seeds in a
planting hole and then covering them with soil. If the soil is dry, after
finishing planting the okra plant water with enough water. Spacing for okra
plants is 70 x 80 cm.
3) Removal of plant
When the seeds of the okra plant grow to 15 cm, the plants will be
transplanted to the planting media which is to a polybag. because, this
research was carried out when plants were planted in the planting media.
3.6 Procedure of the research
These are the whole step of procedure that the resercher do in this research.
1. Preparing the tools and materials of this research.
2. Make a compost fertilizer from eggshell as the main material
3. Planting 4 okra plant.
4. Prepare 4 polybags that filled by planting media which is a mixture of soil
and compost fertilizer, each polybag has different dosage of fertilizer
(0g,40g,30,20).
5. Transfer each plant to each poly bag when it grow to 15 cm.
6. When it has been moved, researcher maintain the okra plants includes
watering and weeding for every 7 days.
7. After 3 month days, researcher observing and analyzing the differences
from the usage of compost fertilizer to 4 planting media.
8. The researcher collecting data from the observation.
9. Make the documentation.

3.7 Techniques for Collecting the Data

In this research, the technique that researcher use to collect data by observation
and documentation In Observation, researcher will observe the okra plant by seeing
the effect from eggshell as compost fertilizer to growth and yield of okra plant with
an interval of 7 days and make a documentation from the research by taking the
picture of it.

3.8 Techniques for Analyze Data

Technique for analyze data in this research is by using quantitative method .The
researcher will calculate the time taken for okra plants to produce when using
eggshells as compost fertilizer. The researcher will analyze the data of okra plant
condition within 7 days planting by measuring the stem size, number of leaf, size
of the leaf, number of fruit (okra), size of the fruit (okra).
