TITLE: SITE MUSEUM AND RESEARCH CENTRE

INTRODUCTION

"One can say that the city itself is the collective memory of its
people, and like memory it is associated with objects and places. The
city is the locus of the collective memory", by ALDO ROSSI. The
architecture of the city is a physical sign in man’s biography, indulged
beyond the meanings and feelings with which we may recognize it.

ARCHAEOLOGY VS ARCHITECTURE
Both disciplines take into account the way societies organized and
transformed landscape, topography, and the general environment.
Formal arrangements are the way buildings were distributed, while
settlement patterns studies deals with the general overview of the
settlement distribution. Hence, archaeology and architecture both
concern broad traditions, thoughts, and ideas of the ancient people.

NEED OF THE STUDY:

 By studying the relationship between ARCHAEOLOGY and

ARCHITECTURE, the thesis intends to bring an educational
experience born with the aim of making a design approach to
the vision, understanding and interpretation of archaeological
remains, in its cultural, social and landscape context.

TYPOLOGY: Cultural

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

 An archaeology museum not only just a museum in
larger scale but also it‘s a national symbol for a country.
 An archaeological site museum collects, preserves,
researches, exhibits, and communicates evidence and
interpretations of the human activities that occurred at
that site to the public.
 To represent the past by collecting all the information in
a same place and to show it to the learners among the
world is the biggest duty of a museum.
 This process of preserving needs to have a museum
related to the heritage preservation and keep it safe from
getting decay over the time.
 To solve this problem they built their own archaeology
museum.

REASON FOR CHOOSING THE TOPIC:

 An archaeology museum is a symbol for any
country. To represent the past by collecting all the
information in a same place and to show it to the
learners among the world.
 To preserve the memory through decades, the rich
knowledge and history of an urban settlement of
sangam age on the banks of river Vaigai.
 A heritage of a place indicates the history which
can be the identity of the place. Not only identity
but also it can focus the accessibility of human
from every region.

AIM:
 This project aims create an opportunity to the
young generation to visit the place and learn the
way of our pre historic settlements and to design an
archaeological site museum that collects, preserves,
researches, exhibits, and communicates evidence
and interpretations of the human activities that
occurred at that site to the public.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE THESIS:

Historical Reminants architectural or non architectural,
perceived as a REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PAST
physically presnet in the present too. They are a part of
the REALM.
This existence of the past in the present challenges the
notion of the term 'HISTORIC' itself due to its
potential to hold more history.

SITE JUSTIFICTION:

KEELADI - An Urban Settlement of Sangam Age on

the banks of river Vaigai. Keezhadi excavation proved
that the region was a CRADLE OF URBAN
CIVILISATION.

This is a large-scale excavation carried out in Tamil

Nadu after the Adichanallur archaeological site. The
settlement lies on the bank of the Vaigai River and it
reflects the ancient culture of Tamils, a turning point in
the cultural historiography of sangam age, accentuating
the site. The excavated remains dated between 5th
century BCE and 3rd century CE.
A potential site of VALUE, RICHNESS IN
HISTORY, HERITAGE and being a recent discovery.

Public awarness of respecting and preserving such

sites through
ARCHITECTURAL INTERVENTIONS
DOCUMENTSTION
DIGITALIZATION
PRACTICE OF ARCHEO-TOURISIM
SUSTAINABLE / ECO- TOURISM
CYARK INITIATIVES
such an ARCHITECTURE would add a layer of
VALUE TO THE SITE AND PROTECT IT FROM
THE DECAY AND MUSEE - SENSE OF RESPECT
AND PUBLIC AWARNESS.

the locality.
 To preserve the past by not destroying its
components rather conserve it precisely to create an
alternative design procedure and connect it to the
environment.
