SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 9

I. OBJECTIVES:

A. CONTENT STANDARDS : The learners demonstrate understanding of key concepts of quadratic equation.
B. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: The learner is able to investigate thoroughly mathematical relationships in
various situations, formulate real-life problems involving quadratic equations, and solve them using a variety of
strategies.

C. LEARNING COMPETENCY: Solve quadratic equations by completing the square.

II. CONTENT: SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATIONS BY COMPLETING THE SQUARE

III. LEARNING RESOURCES:

A. References: Mathematics Learner’s Material 9, pages 35-40

B. Other Learning Resources: Math Made Easy for Grade 9,pages 28-29

IV. PROCEDURES:

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY

Preliminary Activities
1. Greetings Good Morning Class!
2. Opening Prayer Everybody stand, let us pray.
3. Checking of Attendance May I know who is/are absent today?

A. Reviewing previous lesson or The teacher will post/ show flash cards on the
presenting the new lesson board with the following polynomial
expressions:
1) x2 + 8x
2) x2 – 2x
3) x2 – 6x
4) x2 + 5x

Using the “Think-Pair-Share”, ask the students

to add a constant to make each binomial a
perfect square trinomial.

After completing the first task, let them factor

each perfect square trinomial:

1) x2 + 8x + 16
2) x2 - 2x + 1
3) x2 - 6x + 9
25
4) x2 + 5x +
4
B. Establishing a purpose for the Present the following quadratic equations:
lesson. 1) x2 – 2x – 3 = 0
2) x2 – x – 9 = 0
3) 2x2 – 10x + 12 = 0
Can you solve it by factoring? By extracting
the square root?
How else can you solve it?
C. Presenting examples/instances The teacher will introduce the 3rd method in
of the lesson solving quadratic equations. That is by
completing the square. Tell the students that
not all quadratic equations can be solved by
factoring or extracting square roots. With this,
completing the square works whether or not
the equation can be factored.

The teacher will post visual aid on the board

enumerating the steps in solving quadratic
equations by completing the square. Call
students to read these steps.

Then, the teacher will demonstrate how to

solve the given equations following the steps.

D. Discussing new concepts and Give the students opportunity to demonstrate

practicing new skills #1 their understanding of solving quadratic
equation by completing the square. Let them
participate in solving another set of quadratic
equations.
Then, the teacher stop and ask students to form
a group of 3-4 members. Allow them to review
what has been discussed with the group.
Students in their group can ask or clarify
questions to the other member or answer
questions of other. (“Three Minute Review”)
E. Discuss new concepts and Using the same group, let them perform
practicing new skills # 2 another activity. Use the “Circle of Writers”
wherein one student will do the first step, then
the next will do the second step and so on until
they obtain the final answer to these quadratic
equations.
1) x2 – 2x – 15 = 0
2) x2 + 4x = 21
F. Developing mastery(Leads to Solve by completing the square: (Individual)
Formative Assessment) 1) x2 + 6x + 5 = 0
2) 2x2 – 8x + 3 = 0
G. Finding practical applications Using the same group, let them create a real-
of concepts and skills in daily life problem which can be solved by
living. completing the square.
H. Making generalization and Using the “Focused Discussion Pair”, ask
abstraction about the lesson students to make a generalization about the
lesson.
I. Evaluating learning Solve each quadratic equation by completing
the square.
1) x2 +12x + 20 = 0
2) x2 –9x- 36 = 0
3) 3x2 - 15x + 12 = 0
J. Additional activities for Find the roots of the following quadratic
application and remediation Equations by completing the square.

1) x2 –9x + 20 = 0
2) t2 –5x- 24 = 0
3) 3n2 –6n- 3= 0
