Searching
Searching
BSA 2-1P
The movie solely focused on searching the daughter of the protagonist, David Kim, who
then investigated using his daughter’s social media engagements. Though it may seem like his
methods were acceptable, the protagonist clearly violated some of the ethics when it comes to
using modern technologies.
David Kim had broken through his daughter’s social media, read through her messages
and gathered information about the people who might be suspects for the said disappearance.
These acts already violated two of the major ethical concerns when it comes to the use of
modern technology namely, Privacy Concern and Data Gathering Concern. Privacy in
technology deals with the anonymity and virtual self security of a user. In the movie, his
daughter, Margot Kim, had two different personas; the one that she is showing to his father
and the online one. Margot’s online identity was discovered by her father who led to the
progression of the investigation. David Kim then gathered the information from different
people whom Margot interacted with, which again, is a violation of the privacy concern. It is to
be kept in mind that getting information in the internet about a person needs that person’s
permission if the information is to be used outside the internet. Data gathering concern was
also bumped by that case for it is said that every user of the internet should know where their
personal information or publicly published information is being used. All the information about
a person that is posted in the net is owned by that person alone and getting it without his/her
consent may lead to the violation of his/her digital ownership.
The approach of the movie with regards to the main conflict is indeed nice and for me, it
is nine and a half out of ten-movie. Overall, it showed a great series of plot twists up till the end
of the story but their relationship with the other characters were not cleared. What happened
to Margot’s social life afterwards? Did she continue to become like what she is in the beginning
of the story towards other people?
