Lesson Plan in Mathematics VII September 25, 2019: I. Objectives

1. The lesson plan outlines evaluating algebraic expressions by substituting values for variables. Students will practice evaluating expressions like 2x+5 when x=4, and present solutions in a group activity. 2. The group activity involves evaluating expressions such as 3x+7y-8 when x=5 and y=2. 3. Students are evaluated on correctly solving expressions and generalizing that algebraic expressions are evaluated by substituting values and performing operations.

Lesson Plan in Mathematics VII

September 25, 2019

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
1. evaluate algebraic expressions for given values of the variables.
2. show active participation especially in group activities.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

“Evaluation of Algebraic Expressions”; Math VII, M7AL-IIC4: Our World of Math, K to 12 Series,
pages 137-141, Learner’s Materials, Math VII, pages112-116.

III. PROCEDURE:

A. Preliminary Activities
 Opening Prayer
 Checking of attendance
 Review by answering the given assignment
B. Lesson proper
 Ask the students to read the objectives.

Illustrate evaluating algebraic expressions by way of assigning a specific value to each

variable. This process involves finding a numerical value for an algebraic expression by
substituting a given set of numbers in place of the corresponding variables. Take the
expression x+9. If we consider x=11 for the said algebraic expression, what would be its
value?
X+9 = 11+9
= 20
The numerical value of the expression is 20.
Take the expression 2x+3y-4. If we consider x=3 and y=5 for the said algebraic
expression, what would be its value?
2x+3y-4 = 2(3) + 3(5)-4
= 6+15-4
= 21-4
= 17

C. Practice/Exercises
Evaluate the following algebraic expressions.
Expected Answers:
1. 2x+5, when x=4. 13
2. 5a-7, when a=3. 8
3. 8a+10, when a=-2. -6
4. 3x+4y, when x=2 and y=5. 26
5. 2x+5y-9, when x=4 and y=3. 14

D. Group Activity
 Present the Rubrics
 Divide the class into 4 groups, each group will choose LMNOP in-charge.
1. Leader – consolidate the final answer of the group.
2. Materialist – prepare the materials needed.
3. Note Taker – write the final answer of the group in the manila paper.
4. Output In – charge – post the output in the designated area and submit after the
presentation.
5. Presenter – present/report the output of the group.
 You are given 2 minutes to answer.
 Write your final answer in ¼ size of manila paper.

Group Activity:
Evaluate the following algebraic expressions using the given values for the variables.

Expected Answers:
1. 3x+7y-8, when x=5 and y=2. 21
2. 4a-3b+6, when a=5 and b=3. 17
3. 2m+5n+4, when m=-6 and n=2. 2
4. 9x+5y-11, when x=3 and y=-3. 1

Solutions:
1. 3x+7y-8, when x=5 and y=2.
3x+7y-8 = 3(5) + 7(2) -8
= 15+14-8
= 29-8
= 21

2. 4a-3b+6, when a=5 and b=3.

4a-3b+6 = 4(5) - 3(3) +6
= 20-9+6
= 11+6
= 17

3. 2m+5n+4, when m=-6 and n=2.

2m+5n+4 = 2(-6) + 5(2) +4
= -12+10+4
= -2+4
=2

4. 9x+5y-11, when x=3 and y=-3.

9x+5y-11 = 9(3) + 5(-3) -11
= 27 + (-15) -11
= 12-11
=1

E. Generalization

How do we evaluate algebraic expressions?

 To evaluate an algebraic expressions, substitute the given values for each variable and perform all
indicated operations and simplify the result.
IV. EVALUATION:

_c_4. 5x+3, when x=-2+
a. 13 b. 7 c. -7
_b_5. 3a+5b-10, when a=2 and b=4
a. 15 b. 16 c. 17
