GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
Region 1, also known as the Ilocos Region, is located in the northwest of Luzon. It
borders to the east the regions of the Cordillera Administrative Region and
Cagayan Valley, and to the south of the Central Luzon. Located on its west is the
South China Sea.

The region is composed of four provinces, namely: Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La
Union and Pangasinan. Its regional center is San Fernando City, La Union .

DTI-1 or DTI-Ilocos Region is composed of four provinces—Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur,


La Union and Pangasinan; and of nine cities—Alaminos, Batac, Candon, Laoag, San
Carlos, San Fernando, Urdaneta, Vigan, and Dagupan.

The region's total population as of August 1, 2015 was 5,026,128 (POPCEN


2015) with an average annual population growth rate of 1.09 percent from 2010-
2015. In 2015, Ilocos Region has a population density of 388, which translates to
388 person living in a square kilometer.
FESTIVALS
BAC-BACARRA FESTIVAL / fish baskets

This celebration was


started in the year
2005 as a revival and
preservation of their
cultural heritage. The
legendary bac-bacarra
is a freshwater fish
abundant in the rivers
of the town in the
olden days. It is now
extinct.

PAMULINAWEN FESTIVAL
Pamulinawen festival is came from the name of a women made popular in the Ilocano
folk song Pamulinawen. The festival is celebrated in the city of Laoag, Ilocos Norte to
promote camaraderie and sportsmanship.
Empanada Festival

The empanada festival is celebrated along with the city charter day of Batac which is every 23rd of
June. The festival features the process of making Empanada which is the most popular product
of the city. Batac Empanada characterizes the local’s ingenuity, industry, resourcefulness and
creativity. The Empanada festival promotes the agricultural products of the city which is the
main source of income by the people.

DULANG FOOD FESTIVAL

The Ilocano word dulang means table. This event features table foods. Its the 5th year
that is being celebrated in concurrence with the Pamulinawen Festival of Laoag City.
There were restos being invited to showcase and sample their food products.
Most of the foods featured
are traditional. I have seen
the dudol, cascaron, kinalti,
pakbet, longanissa, and
many others. The Ilocanos
are fond of eating malunggay
or horseradish thus uniquely
made products from this are
also e xhibited.
Calesa festival
The popular horse-drawn carriage of the Philippines is the star of the show at the recently held Kalesa
Parade during the Pamulinawen Festival in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. The featured kalesas were of various
shapes and colors. Some were made of banana leaves or corn cobs while some were patterned after
popular sights in Ilocos Norte like the sinking bell tower and windmills.

SARSUELA / ZARSUELA FESTIVAL

Zarzuela is a form of art where actors stage a drama. It can be described as an opera since the players
alternately sing lines and deliver dialogues. Dance moves and humour were also present in this form
entertainment. Usually, this has a romantic form of scene while the other one is the baroque zarzuela

Padre Burgos museum Vigan City

This museum is the ancestral house and birthplace of priest patriot Fr. Jose Burgos. Known as
Padre Burgos House, it is one of the notable historic structures of Vigan, the capital of the
province of Ilocos Sur. It is a two-story structure located near the Provincial Capitol and close to
St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral. It was renovated by the Filipinas Foundation, Inc. and
inaugurated on May 3, 1975. In January 1989, a Contract of Lease was executed by the Ilocos
Sur Historical and Cultural Foundation, Inc. leasing the memorabilia for 50 years, and turning
over the administration to the National Museum.
