About the author:

Alfred William McCoy

He was born on June 8, 1945 (age 74) at Concord, Massachusetts, United States . He
earned a Bachelor of Arts in European History from Columbia University in 1968, a Master of Arts
in Asian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley in 1969, and a Doctor of Philosophy in
Southeast Asian History from Yale University in 1977.

He has also been a professor of History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and also
the director of the center of South East Asian studies. McCoy spent 30 years writing about
southeast Asian history and politics:

•Philippine cartoons (1985)

•Closer than brothers: manhood at the Philippine military academy (2001)

•lives at the margin (2003)

About the book:

Philippine political cartoons gained full expression during the American era. Filipino artists
recorded national attitudes toward the coming of the Americans as well as the changing mores
and times. While the 377 cartoons compiled in this book speak for themselves, historian Alfred
McCoy’s extensive research in Philippine and American archives provides a comprehensive
background not only to the cartoons but to the turbulent period as well. Artist-writer Alfredo
Roces, who designed the book, contributes an essay on Philippine graphic satire of the period
1.) There are no prosecuting attorneys for jobbers

The Spanish Jesuits were making any petty crimes for them not to focus on major crimes that is
happening. They are trying to distract the attorneys for them not to give a focus with the problems
of Filipinos.

2.) Hijos de una sola madre-patria

This caricature is about the reconciliation about Malays and Filipinos. It talks about the equality
of pure blooded Filipinos and half blooded Filipinos.
3.) Paglalakbay sa langit

This caricatures is about how the spanish friars are trying to deceive the Filipino Illustrados. Those
who are above or at the basket are the Spanish Friars and those who are below the basket are the
Filipinos Illustrados. They are asking where the Spanish Friars will go, and they answered them
that they will bring the offerings to God to glorify Him.

4.) David Y Goliath

This caricature represents Ramon Diokno and Dr. Gomez. Dr. Gomez, the one who are seating,
and who has a lower rank or role than Ramos Diokno have more impact in our society. Dr. Gomez
has done lot of things than Ramos Diokno who is in the higher rank in our society.
5.) Ang mga mapapalad

There are foreign campanies that are enslaving the Filipinos for their own profit. While the
Filipinos were letting them to take advantage of their hardwork.

6.) La prensa amarilla

It is about the low standards of Philippine journalism among Manila newspaper. They are hiding
the true situation of the Philippines.
7.) Equal work, unequal salary. Why?

Filipino teachers faced discrimination in wage and position. American teachers were sent in elite
and secondary schools while Filipinos were sent primary in remote areas. The salary of Filipino
teachers were Php 1,080 while Americans receives a salary of Php 4,000 per year.

8.)The loyalty of the Filipinos

The cartoons shows the time where there was a war between America and Europe and Filipinos
helped them by Sergio Osmena’s action of giving money from Red Cross funds to America.
Therefore, the loyalty of the Filipinos is on America and not on their own country.

As the english translation says while the chinese merchants progress, Filipinos are suffering.

10.) The great struggle has begun who will win?

This represents the fight between the farmers or Agricultural Assembly and their enemies like
friars and urserers. Farmers has no opportunity because friar banks don’t lend money to farmers
unless they have ltitles so they are forced to borrow money to ursurers who adds large amount
of interest.
11.) Las cucañas del jo de julio (kuskus balungus)

The act where men are climbing up to the top to get the American flag symbolized the Filipinos
who wanted to be part of the government. The American flag symbolizes that even though a
Filipino was in a position, the American are still followed by these public officials.

12.) A new wrinkle in the art of thieveing

This caricature shows how the Americans benefit from the hardships of the Filipinos. These
Filipino farmers clean, cultivate, and improve the land but they do not own any of it.

13.) Question of time


This caricature shows how Chinese corruption happened in 1920s by bribing. The Chinese parents
choose public officials as the Godfather of their children so that they can not be charged by
bribing.

14.) Why is there opium in the Philippines?

The caricature shows how Opium, a kind of drug, can enter the Philippines. The drug was put in a
cement box, cans, and such to be kept until they were able to pass through in the Custom House.

This caricature shows inequality in terms of voting. It shows that only men and the educated were
able to vote.

16.) Heroes All

This caricature appeared on Free Press as Japanese troops were entering the Northern part. The
Philippine-American resistance to 40000 Japanese troops showed a courageous example. Later
on, the Philippines-American bond faded and only the Americans were credited from all the
battles.
17.) Ang mapintas kaaway sa mamumuo

The man who was holding a ribbon kind-of-flag symbolizes the Americans who were telling us
what to act or what to do and telling us demeaning words. The people who are looking away are
the Filipinos who just accept and follow whatever the American says. This caricature simply shows
the dominance of the Americans over the Filipinos.

18.) Pag. Ilag sa amillaramiento

This caricature shows that the masses are paying taxes but the friars, who should have been a
good model, are the ones who were running away from their responsibilities.
19.) Which Weighs More?

The man's named was Uncle Sam. He is a Filipino but pro-American. In this caricature, Uncle Sam
is now learning how to weigh things up and recognizes the rights of his fellow Filipinos.

20.) Mamumuong amerikano, mamumuong pilipino

The caricature shows inequality in terms of labor. The American who was only an easy job was
paid higher than the Filipinos who are actually working hard but gets lesser than it should be.
