Roll number: 20 - -0

Problem 1 2 points
The New York State Health Department reports a 10% rate of the HIV virus for
the “at-risk” population. Under certain conditions, a preliminary screening test for
the HIV virus is correct 95% of the time. (Subjects are not told that they are HIV
infected until additional tests verify the results.) If someone is randomly selected
from the at-risk population, what is the probability that they have tested positive in
the initial screening?

.........
Solution:

P(+ve)=0.95 × 0.1 + 0.05 × 0.9

Problem 2 2 points
In a group of 40 people, 10 are healthy and every person of the remaining 30 has
either high blood pressure, a high level of cholesterol or both. If 15 have high blood
pressure and 25 have high level of cholesterol. If a person is selected randomly from
this group, what is the probability that he/she has either high blood pressure or high
level of cholesterol.

.........
Solution:

P(High BP or High Cholesterol)= 15

40
+ 25
40
− 10
40
Problem 5 2

Problem 3 2 point
In a school, 60% of pupils have access to the internet at home. A group of 2 students
is chosen at random. Find the probability that at least 1 student has access to the
internet.

.........
Solution:

P(at least 1 has internet access)=1 − P (< 1) = 1 − [0.42 ]

Problem 4 2 point
The “Guess What Cup” game is played as follows: There are 30 cups and one ball.
The ball is placed under one of the cups and the dealer shuffles the cups around. The
contestant must guess which cup contains the ball. If 5 people play this game at the
same time and each individually make a guess, what is the probability that they all
guess the correct cup (that contains the ball) ?

.........
Solution:

1
305

Problem 5 2 point
Cross-fertilizing a red and a white flower produces red flowers 25% of the time. Now
we cross-fertilize five pairs of red and white flowers and produce five offspring. What
is the probability that there are no red flower plants in the five offspring?

.........

Problem 6 3

Solution:

P(No red)=0.755

Problem 6 2 point
Alice has 2 kids and one of them is a girl. What is the probability that the other
child is also a girl?

.........
Solution:

S = {BB, BG, GB, GG}, P (2nd G) = 13 , ∵ excluding event BB, the sample space
is reduced
