Applied Fluid Mechanics (ME 505B) Assignment

Section : A Due date : 10/11/2019, 17:00 hrs.

1. Prove that in case of forced vortex, the rise of liquid level at the ends is equal to the
fall of liquid level at the axis of rotation.
2. Sketch the stream lines represented by Ψx2 y2. Also find out velocity and its
direction at point (1, 2).
3. Explain the function and performance of Torque converter.
4. State the Bernoulli's theorem for compressible flow. Derive an expression for
Bernoulli's equation when the process is adiabatic.
5. A hydraulic jump forms at the downstream end of spillway carrying 18 m 3/s
discharge. If the depth before jump is 0·80 m, determine the depth after the jump and
energy loss.
6. The efficiency of a turbomachine may be assumed to be a function of power P, flow
rate Q, head gH, density of fluid ρ, rotational speed , characteristic diameter D and
fluid viscosity µ. Using Buckinghams -theorem, derive expressions for head
coefficient, flow coefficient, power coefficient, specific speed.
7. What do you understand by equi-potential line and constant stream line. Describe the
use and limitations of the flow nets. Under what conditions can one draw flow net?
8. Derive from first principle, the condition for irrotational flow. Prove that for Ideal flow
both stream function and potential function satisfy Laplus equation.
9. Derive the expression for the velocity of sound in a fluid. What is the relation of Bulk
Modulus with the same. State the expression.
10. An aeroplane is flying at a height of 15 km where the temperature is (minus) – 50
Deg. C. The speed of the plane is corresponding to M = 2. Assume k = 1·4, R = 287
J/kg °K. Find the velocity of sound for adiabatic process and the speed of the
aeroplane. Assume any other value if required.
11. A uniform flow with a velocity of 3 m/s is flowing over a plane source of strength 30 m
2s. The uniform flow and source flow are in same line. A point P is situated in the flow
field. The distance of the point P from the source is 0·5 m and it is at an angle of 30°
to the uniform flow. Determine :
(i) Stream function at point P
(ii) Resultant velocity of flow at P
(iii) Locations of stagnation point from the source.
