Objective of the Subject
 We will be able to:

Introduction to “Sputnik”
 It was the world’s first artificial satellite.
 It was launched on 4th October, 1957 by
USSR (Russia).
 It had a size of a basketball (58 cm in
diameter).
 It had weighed only 83.6 kg.
 It took about 98 minutes to orbit the
Earth on its elliptical path.
 It’s speed was 29,000 kilometers per
hour.
 It was in space for three months.
Effects of “Sputnik”
 The launch of Sputnik started a new era in
new political, military, technological, and
scientific developments.
 USA established ARPA (Advanced
Research Project Agency), which invented
world changing technology Internet & E-
mail.
 Cold war between USA & USSR began
which leads to dissolution of USSR into 15
new nations.
 USA adopted new education policy for
technological development which turns
USA to be world’s only SUPERPOWER
nation.
India’s Space Journey
 Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is responsible for India’s Space
Program.
 ISRO was formed by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai on 15th August 1969.
 ISRO is one of the six space agencies in the world with the capability to build
and launch satellites from its own soil.
 Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was the director of India’s first Indigenous Satellite
Launch Vehicle (SLV-3).
 The first Indian Satellite, Aryabhatta was (named after an Indian astronomer and
mathematician) launched on 19th April, 1975.
 ISRO’s mission to Mars (Mangalyan) was the only mission to reach the Mars in
the first attempt.
 In February 2017, ISRO has created a new record by launching 104 satellites in
one go (Russia- 37 & USA- 29).
 Till date ISRO had launched more than 250 satellites for India & other nations.
