Assignment No. 0 1 Date:

1. Enlist various software used for CAD/CAM/CAE with applications. Also enlist which
CAD/CAE software is used in various industries.

Ans:- Various Design Software are as following:

• Catia v5
• Solid works
• Siemens NX
• Auto CAD
• Alias
• ZBrush
• Rahinoceros
• Fusion360
• Tinker CAD
• 3D Max
• Lumiscaphe

Applications:

• Checking interference: It is vital to check the assembled structure made up of various

components to ensure that they occupy the designed space. There may be risk that
components of the assembly may occupy the space same as the assembly itself
• Animation capability: Most of the CAD software have the feature of performing
animation operation of the designed components. This is usually in the form of
kinematics package of the software.

Assignment No. 0 1 Date:

• Modelling Area: specialists use it to design different buildings that they have imagined.
CAD gives them the chance to create those buildings in both 2D and 3D and reproduce
the replica as it will look like in real life. Fashion designers also use the help of CAD
because thanks to it they are designing their latest expressions and making them come
true as soon as possible.
• Product Data Management: Companies and even small firms can use CAD software in
order to keep track of their business functions. Thanks to this you can always be sure that
there are many ways thanks to which your business is safe and you will not suffer any
loses.
• Surface Modelling: This process is used to create surfaces of desired shape by trimming,
stitching and joining different surfaces to create a final shape model.
• Drafting Detailing: This process is used to create the 2D drawings of components or
assemblies; usually directly from a 3D model, although 2D CAD can create 2D drawings
directly.

2. Desribe the evaluation criteria of CAD/CAM software.

Ans:

• Hardware requirements - depending on how difficult the tasks to be solved, it is

possible that the CAD system can not be operated on to date hardware and there will be
need to purchase a new one.
• What are the capabilities of CAD - i.e. what it can do, what functionality it offer? E.g.
volume parametric modeling, surface modeling, production of sheet metal parts, support
modeling pipeline and cable assemblies, various analysis (strength, thermal, kinematic,
etc..), supporting the creation of photo-realistic visualization, semiautomatic creation of
drawings, support generating NC code for the production and so on.

Assignment No. 0 1 Date:

• Internal Compatibility - if the company use some CAD system and decided to move to
the new one, will be old data compatible with the new system? It is possible to open and
edit old files in the new CAD system? If company not use any CAD system, will be
created data compatible with systems for planning, organizing and promoting the product
life cycle.
• Support - what support the CAD system manufacturer provides to its customers? Are
there subsidiaries with workers who can if it is necessary to come directly to the point
and solve the problem? It is possible to contact support at any time.
• Language version - all major CAD systems are available in English, but not every user
of CAD system can use this language.
• Accessories and add-ons - what supplements and extensions are available for the criteria
for selecting the cad system - how to choose CAD system Transfer CAD system (e.g.
modules for simulation, FEM calculations, different design automation tasks.
• License model - what type of license is for the CAD system available? Is there discount
when purchasing multiple licenses, are there floating licenses.
• Price - it's for the average user probably one of the most important criteria. Each person
is interested in how much selected CAD system will cost you.

3. What is PLM? Explain different phases in PLM and its benefits in automotive sector

Ans: Product lifecycle management (PLM) is an information management system that can
integrate data, processes, business systems and, ultimately, people in an extended enterprise.
PLM software allows you to manage this information throughout the entire lifecycle of a
product efficiently and cost-effectively from ideation, design and manufacture through service
and disposal.

➢ Following are the Phases of PLM-

Assignment No. 0 1 Date:

• Phase 1: Conceive- The first stage is the definition of the product requirements based
on customer, company, market and regulatory bodies’ viewpoints. From this
specification, the product's major technical parameters can be defined. In parallel, the
initial concept design work is performed defining the aesthetics of the product together
with its main functional aspects. Many different media are used for these processes,
from pencil and paper to clay models to 3D CAD computer-aided industrial
design software.
• Phase 2: Design- This is where the detailed design and development of the product’s
form starts, progressing to prototype testing, through pilot release to full product launch.
It can also involve redesign and ramp for improvement to existing products as well
as planned obsolescence.
• Phase 3: Realize- Once the design of the product’s components is complete, the
method of manufacturing is defined. This includes CAD tasks such as tool design;
including creation of CNC Machining instructions for the product’s parts as well as
creation of specific tools to manufacture those parts, using integrated or separate CAM
Software.
• Phase 4: Service - The final phase of the lifecycle involves managing "in-service"
information. This can include providing customers and service engineers with the
support and information required for repair and maintenance, as well as waste
management or recycling. This can involve the use of tools such as Maintenance, Repair
and Operations Management (MRO) software.

➢ Benefits In Automotive Sector

• Overcoming Product Complexity: Efficient Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is

increasingly becoming a survival factor for the automotive industry. The complexity of
models and variants is on the increase, especially with regard to how individual vehicles
are equipped. Development activities are being outsourced more and more.

• Managing the Supply Chain with Precision: Working together in networks is one of
the greatest challenges faced by the global automotive industry. With production-specific
and logistics-specific solutions for Supply Chain Management (SCM), Siemens IT
Solutions and Services is opening up new opportunities in the global collaboration
between suppliers, partners, third-party service providers, dealers and garages.
• Managing Sales and After-Sales: Given the ever-increasing variety of models, variants
and equipment, customers, potential customers, dealers and garages require continuously
up-to-date information on products, pricing, servicing and repair.
• Harmonizing Processes, Standardizing IT: The standardization of IT landscapes and
the harmonization of business processes make a key contribution to company success.
Integrated packaged solutions that allow for differentiated core processes increase data
quality, lower complexity and reduce costs while increasing productivity.
• Deploying Innovative Electronics: In recent decades, automotive engineering has been
transformed by electronics. Software and electronics now account for 70% to 90% of all
automotive innovations. Siemens IT Solutions and Services offers OEMs and suppliers in
this industry many years of experience in embedded software development as well as its
own solution modules.
• Actively Shaping Change: At Siemens IT Solutions and Services, the long-term, holistic
optimization of customer processes is paramount – from product development through to
