STUDENT TEACHING EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE (STEP)

STANDARD 1, PART I

Student Teaching Evaluation of Performance (STEP) is the process for preparing and implementing a unit of instruction.

By understanding the community and school environment and the makeup of the classroom, you will be able to strategically meet the overall needs of your
students. In the first two weeks of student teaching, you should focus on learning about the students you will be working with. You are expected to teach the
unit you are preparing by the end of week 8.

Review the geographic, district, and school demographics of your student teaching classroom. Utilize the district or school website, your cooperating
teacher/mentor, or school administrator for this information. You may also use your state Department of Education website for statistical data on community
and school demographics.

Complete STEP Standard, 1 Part I that includes:

A. Geographic Location
B. District Demographics
C. School Demographics

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected. This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to

Facility Setting: Stability of Community: Perception of the Level
Rural State of Growth of Community Support: Medium

 Discuss the possible effect these characteristics could have on planning, delivery, and assessment of your unit.
 Cite the references used for this information.
My participating school is set in a rural city, Casa Grande, Arizona, population 53,657 (Casagrande.gov). It is defined as a public school. There is a medium level of community
support. The schools have received grants for solar power and most recently received grants to redo the front offices at all of the public elementary schools. This included using
bullet proof glass and closing in the entrances of all schools. In order to get into the school, one of the school staff must press a button to open a door. All other access doors and
gates remain locked at all times. Teachers and staff have access keys and gate keys. The median family salary for Casa Grande is $48,385 (Casagrande.gov).

The schools are in the medium community support level. There have been some movements in the right direction, such as the revamped security features and solar panel
systems but more could be done. Many of the schools still struggle to provide teachers with everything they need. Playgrounds need shade structures, students need
workbooks, teachers have a limit on how many copies they can make a year, the schools just barely received ink for printers and they are 4 weeks into the school year. Many of
the title 1 schools don't receive an optimal level of parent support. The teachers provide many things for the classroom and students that aren't provided elsewhere.

I will need to take into account how many paper and resources my lessons will require. Since the median family income is in the middle class range, I can't expect students to
complete any homework online, or rely on technological devices to be available for all students at home. From my own experiences, I have seen the lack of parent involvement
in many instances, so I also need to take into consideration that students may be completing their homework on their own accord and not receiving any academic support at
home. Homework should be differentiated to ensure that all students can complete it, without additional help.

According to the Casa Grande Elementary School District's website, the district is home to some 6,500 students. The district serves grade levels PK-8; 1 pre-k, 9 elementary and 3
middle schools. The average percentage of district students who qualify for free or reduced lunch for 2019, is 76%.

Many students may not have technological devices at home so it is important that they do get to them during the school day. I will need to ensure that many of my lessons are
integrating digital media devise. All benchmark testing for the district is now 100% online, so it is crucial that students are competently familiar with how to use and navigate a
computer and online school curriculum. A way to get the students used to test taking on the computer, would be for them to take unit assessments etc. online.

 Discuss the possible effect these characteristics could have on the planning, delivery, and assessment of your unit.
 Cite the references used for this information.
Mesquite Elementary is defined as a Title 1 school. The percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch is 94%. This is the deciding factor for designating the school
as Title 1. I will need to keep that as a constant forethought with all of my lesson and implementation plans. The school did receive a "C" grade for 2018, which is up from a "D,"
which they received in 2017. The school is aiming to keep the C or better. I can use this information as an inference, as to how much weight is given to state tests. This means
many things that I teach will have to be focused on what the students will be tested for on the AZ Merit and other important benchmark tests.
