Why Significant Figures?

Consider the following measurements:

8 cm 8.0 cm 8.00 cm

===> More digits indicate a more precise measurement

Significant figures/digits in a measurement include the known digits plus one final estimated
digit(place)

Sig-Fig Rules!

1. Any non-zero numbers ARE sig-figs

2. Any zeros in between 2 non-zero


numbers ARE sig-figs

3. Any zeros before non-zeros ARE


NOT sig-figs

4a. Any zeros after non-zeros in a number


without a decimal point ARE NOT sig-figs

4b. Any zeros after non-zeros in a number


with a decimal point ARE sig-figs
