Summary of “Neurotic Anxiety Suffered by Willy Wonka

in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and The Chocolate Factory”

Introduction

Almost every human being has definitely experienced anxiety in their life , which is a

reasonable thing for each individual to do, like the reactions of the person if they were having

conflicts. However, in situations in which they are usually able to handle the anxiety without any

difficulty, they can not regulate it. The problems suffered by each individual not only occur in the

real world, but also suffered by fictional characters in the world of imagination, as in literature.

Literature symbolizes conflict and life, such as social, cultural, and morality, although natural things

and the inner or subjective world of the characters have also become objects of literary imitation

(Wellek & Warren, 1956: 94).

Anxiety becomes a sensible situation, as someone needs to want everything in life to operate

smoothly, prevent any distress or failure, and as expected, i.e. neurotic anxiety (Ogden 176-177).

Neurotic implies blocking or reducing in multiple ego functions, spelling out uncontrollable

emotions, particularly anxiety and frequent anger, occasionally even convulsive attacks, sleeplessness

or serious sleep disturbances with typical dreams triggered by trauma again and again, mental

repetitions during the day, and the traumatic situation either partly or entirely in the form of fantasies

(Ogden 104).

A novel containing phenomena with traumatic experience becomes the author's work of

fantasy. In this case, neurotic anxiety can be found in the novel just as in real life, which can be

analyzed in the psychological approach. This is appropriate because literature and psychology have

the same functional connection that implies equally helpful for studying a person's personality and

mental situation when there are many conflicts between the protagonists in the novel. Furthermore,

FINAL EXAM OF INTENSIVE READING CLASS “B” 1

there is also an indirect relationship between literature and psychology in which literature and

psychology have the same goal (Freud in Parker 124-125).

Analyzing a novel specifically based on Sigmund Freud's personality in children's literature,

the author reviewed a novel Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (Quentin Blake's illustration edition

in 2007) as the subject of research where Willy Wonka is the primary character. This novel is a 1960

work by British Writer Roald Dahl. He is specifically an author of children's literature, and as inspired

by all readers, he always receives some prizes. This novel says a tale about a primary personality,

Willy Wonka being the owner of the biggest and most famous chocolate factory in the world. He

arranges the contest for all the world's kids in which he provides a restricted amount of tickets as a

trip to his chocolate factory.

As the main character, Willy Wonka has neurotic anxiety in which he appears to be under

threat, allowing a failure to reach certain objectives. This article describes how the aspects of neurotic

anxiety affect the personality of Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory's importance in negotiating

his anxiety. He always receives bad moments when someone disturbs the chocolate factory can harm

his life. His personality is known to have been overwhelmed by a sense of insecurity due to anxiety

and trauma, which provides him excessive ambition and this ambition makes him face failure.

As this article utilizes qualitative techniques to clarify elements of neurotic anxiety and

meaning to discover a personality disorder through to the main character. First of all, this paper

explores the character and characterization intrinsic in this novel to clarify a personality problem from

this novel. Then discovering the approach to personality through verbal dialogs among other

personalities. And the last one focuses on the neurotic aspect of the approach to personality and the

primary protagonist associates the significant significance of an item with psychoanalysis.

Research Method

The study is a qualitative research that, according to Blaxter (1996: 60), is concerned with

gathering and analyzing data in as many forms as possible, mainly non-numeric. The method used in

the research is a descriptive method aimed at objectively describing the subjects the science is

concerned with by collecting the basic descriptive information necessary to understand the nature of

our subject (Borg, 1987: 10).

Finding And Discussion

The problem is analyzed in three steps. First is to explore the main character in order to relate

to other characters. Secondly, the approach to personality, like I d, Ego, and Superego, is examined.

And the last steps in this section are to find neurotic anxiety elements and significant things to

negotiate anxiety.

A. Willy Wonka’s Character and Characterization

Willy Wonka is a founder of a chocolate factory as the main character. He lives in a tiny town

where he has the finest chocolate factory in the world. Without his parents (orphan boy), he lives

alone. Everyone understands him as the creator of the finest chocolate recipes that have ever existed

in this world. By himself he takes care of all kinds of operations linked to the process of creating

chocolate, sometimes assisted by his employers (8-12).

Willy Wonka defined the characterization as the genius of the world's most renowned

founding chocolate factory. Grandpa Joe informs his grandson the figure of Mr. Willy Wonka, Charlie

becomes the most notable person he ever encountered because Grandpa Joe was a former Wonka

Chocolate Factory worker in the last moment (9)

Grandpa Joe and Grandma Josephine are kind enough to judge the figure of Willy Wonka.

Although he rarely socializes with them around him (introvert), they are still regarded his figure who

understands they want, which he produces can eat chocolates. Although, as a figure of an exceptional

chocolate manufacturer, he receives many judges from them, but he understands that there is still a

shortage (10).

With four stupid kids, he gets upset. He believes he's told Charlie if there's a declaration that

everyone gets the supply of candy for a lifetime. But he feels disappointed about their behavior around

Wonka's Factory's visit with them. As a consequence of their behavior, he demonstrates Charlie that

he does not want to follow his advisors (150).

In addition, he gets angry when asked by Grandpa Joe to discuss Charlie's chocolate factory

at the time. Grandpa Joe feels surprised and incredible that he is giving Charlie his factory because

Grandpa Joe thinks if his grandson is not an adult yet. But, with Grandpa Joe, Wonka does not argue,

and he will invite the family of Charlie to move into his factory (151-152).

From the above statements it demonstrates that Willy Wonka is portrayed as the primary well-

off personality representing the same as human in the true globe where Willy Wonka has all the

disputes in his lives and the nature of the leading figures known as the leading figure who has

complexity. However, he's only imagined the psychological situation in literature.

B. Personality Structure of Willy Wonka

a. Id

Grandpa Joe informs his grandson, Charlie, if Willy Wonka wishes to create a fresh receipt

from his factory of the finest chocolates, Wonka Factory will like to be consumed by all individuals.

Because Willy Wonka is the proprietor of Chocolate Factory who cleaver in producing the finest

chocolate recipe he supports, he is satisfied with what he always does. His sensation demonstrates

that he is the world's renowned owner chocolate factory that has the skill to process the finest recipe

for chocolate that the owners of the other chocolate have never accomplished (9).

This is what Freud has confirmed that a person who wants to be satisfied with what they need,

then tries to achieve satisfaction and pleasure from all desires and needs. Willy Wonka has an instinct

(Id) to meet the pleasure of passion with him, according to all the above statements. He's looking for

something that's a dream of enjoyment for all people, especially children, in his life. All those who

believe that his decision as a chocolate genius is conscious of what they want.

b. Ego

Grandpa Joe tells his grandson, Charlie, if with any styles or methods, Willy Wonka can

exhibit his ability to make new chocolate receipts. Not only that, but he'll also create a chocolate

product they'll never look at before. Willy Wonka has desires that he will try to be serious about

creating a new chocolate recipe for them in the world, hidden to make everyone like what he creates.

He tries to find ways to build and be very satisfied with his results for those who love his chocolate

(23).

Willy Wonka is going to demonstrate his customer the significant space, The Chocolate

Room. He and his guest are accompanied by the Oompa-Loompas to visit everything about the ship

producing chocolates. In this space he feels pride, so he will also feel pride in his guest because he

can do something about chocolate here (87). And then he also invites the Nut Room to invite his

visitors. They're just taking a look for that room. Many types of nuts manufactured for chocolates.

They do not enter there because many squirrels become employees in Wonka Factory (109). Finally,

he also shows them the Testing Room that there are a lot of televisions that Oompa-Loompas

controlled some chocolates. He demonstrates off his because there are nothing firms that have the

largest space than his plant. With it he feels proud because he will make it sophisticated (125).

According to all of the above statements, it demonstrates that what Freud provided about

Willy Wonka's behavior can be seen if he wishes to accomplish the fulfillment and skill that he

requires principle job and company that is willing to create his behavior will be able to identify what

FINAL EXAM OF INTENSIVE READING CLASS “B” 5

should be regarded as a consequence later. His characteristic, of course, is a reality that meets Id's

desire; it requires a process that can increase the danger that has occurred.

c. Superego

Not having parents around him to support Willy Wonka doesn't make him unpopular. His

living condition is that it is unrealistic where things are made of chocolates and it plays a major part

to alienate society from the outside world. Everyone understands he's the world's greatest famous

chocolate maker, so they've provided him an appraisal. Every moment after Willy Wonka invited

them to stay in the Wonka Company, Oompa-Loompahave accompanies him.

Oompa-Loompas would like to offer a warning by singing a song, not only to Willy Wonka,

but also to his guest. They warn you not to be a covetous kid who likes to do lightly. This kid deserves

to be punished, so for further processing by Willy Wonka's command (78-79) they take him into the

Fudge Room. Second, Willy Wonka's magic gum chewing Violet Beauregarde. They demonstrate

this girl is really unreasonable because she has been reproved by Willy Wonka for not chewing the

gums when the gum production method is not yet ideal and he asks them to squeeze her off to The

Juicing Room (99-100).

Third, in the Nut Room, Veruca Salt catches a working squirrel break of walnuts. She splashed

to drain the unused walnuts where the squirrel contained piles of garbage, and then the squirrels

rushed her relatives into the hole too. Willy Wonka is sadly asking Oompa-Loompas to expel them

from there (141). When Mike Teavee finally entered the television room, they gave advice that

watching television exceeds the recommended time is very hazardous and would have a adverse effect

on kids. But this stupid boy still compelled himself to watch Willy Wonka's TV magic because he

felt curious. Ultimately, his body becomes as tiny as what's on it (141).

From all the above statements it can be seen that although he has no parents, but there is

someone who always accompanies him, they are the Oompa-Loompa. They always sing a song during

the Wonka Factory trip after one of their guests becomes an unfortunate time. They always restrict

FINAL EXAM OF INTENSIVE READING CLASS “B” 6

him from mimicking like his guest from their song because they feel careful with him if he can think

of the highest price or not of his guest. This scheme has been submitted on conscious, preconscious,

and unconscious in order to regulate and satisfy action in the form evaluation and ethics.

C. Aspects of Neurotic Anxiety by Willy Wonka and His Defence Mechanism

There are spies that enter Wonka's Factory successfully. They come from the factory of

Fickelgruber, Mr. Prodnose Factory, and the factory of Slugworth. They returned to their factory

where they arrived and told it after effectively stole best candy recipe at Wonka's Factory.

Fickelgruber Factory can produce hard-to-melt ice cream. Prodnose Factory introduces gum that can't

be lost, it looks like every moment it was chewed. And last but not least, Slugworth is able to give

sweat balloon candy that can grow in size before being chewed (15).

a. Feeling Anxious by Willy Wonka’s Character

When he warns Prince of Pondicherry, Willy Wonka feels nervous. Wonka asks him to eat

his chocolate palace because it doesn't last long. But he rejects the advice from Wonka and does not

eat his palace. He invites Wonka to construct his palace just to make it a huge spot for chocolates.

Finally, it starts to melt from Wonka's sensation, and then it slowly sinks to the floor. Indian Price

sleeps in a enormous chocolate pond (13).

When they start visiting his factory, Willy Wonka feels anxious about five children. He wants

to check all those that are not missing. He will start inviting them from his consciousness to travel his

factory if they are all completed. With a clang, all gates come close, no one can see anything from

outside (60).

Willy Wonka asks his guest to walk to his factory as he is closing the bigger door. Not all of

his employees are standing up to the cold. He feels anxious about them because if the door doesn't

close, they can die due to outdoor weather-freezing effect (60).

Willy Wonka is anxious to say that all people like Teave's cereals. He thinks if it can damage

their bodies because he assumes that in pencil sharpeners it has been produced by a little curly wood.

If everyone eats it, they can disturb their bodies and they can die. He doesn't hear it from someone

like Teave again because he gets angry when he he hears it again. He knows the disadvantage of

eating it a lot from his consciousness (130).

The consciousness of Willy Wonka is anxious when something occurs to him. When he

understands that his age is no longer young, he is concerned. He insists on becoming old age, the

ability to think and control his chocolate factory can not be fully or seriously focused. If he has seen

it as genius and ambitious from his characterization, he worries that seeing his age is no longer young

who can go manages his chocolate factory; he doesn't want to plant it will be transferred to random

people who don't feel correct (195).

From all of the above statements it shows that the personality of Willy Wonka becomes a man

of perfection, which is no guarantee if his life is calm and safe. Freud also claimed that if people can

feel it easily, they will be concerned with any conditions of their physical, so it will be easy for people

to worry they are hard to be controlled by themselves. Seems like Willy Wonka, he's worried about

his age, he feels he's scared if he dies later, who's right and has a real chocolate factory for his life.

Besides that, if negative impact damages his life from someone who is incredible with his advices,

he can feel anxious.

b. Feeling nervous by Willy Wonka’s Character

Willy Wonka feels nervous as he deemed the chocolate factory to be a very significant

component of his life. Initially, he feels it when he knew that his plant is going to go bankrupt. This

situation because a number of staff have ever betrayed him that rivals are no more than spies. He is

concerned about his plant that becomes his workers ' turnover and welfare (6).

One can be seen by pulling his beard and shouting "hard once." He gets very disappointed

with his factory's alert condition. He's confused about what he's got to do if he's not bankrupt. Because

FINAL EXAM OF INTENSIVE READING CLASS “B” 8

his competitor, like Fickelgruber Factory when they introduce non-melting ice cream and other

factories, Mr. Prodnose who introduces chewing gum does not pass away after it has been chewed at

any time. This is Willy Wonka, with some secret recipes stolen from the skies, starts stressful with

his plant (6).

When anything in the chocolate room gets damaged, Willy Wonka becomes nervous. He loves

beauty in this space with condition. During this trip, he intends to inform them that there is nothing

to harm and always be cautious because he believes this space is the chocolate factory's nerve center

and becomes the core of the entire company (87).

During the competition's trip, he also presents his guest to the beauty anything that created

chocolate. Anything in this space has never been discovered in another plant because it is Wonka's

Factory's initial manufacturing. He becomes anxious about the rivals around him cheating everything

in this space, i.e. the chocolate waterfall, because it's an significant thing that makes his chocolate.

Nothing else, like Wonka's Factory, can generate many chocolates, so he feels certain about his

chocolate manufacturing (66).

When Augustus does anything to chocolates, Willy Wonka feels nervous. This kid in

Chocolate River intentionally takes some chocolate with his hand. Wonka recognizes him and warns

him not to take chocolates. But, this kid rejects his advice and keeps on doing it. His mom warns

again, but he also refuses to speak out. Wonka asks this kid to leave Chocolate River aside because

he is not contaminated with hygiene (72).

Willy Wonka feels nervous about coming to Loompaland before. He tells Mrs. Salt if there is

a bad and scary situation and condition in it. Mrs. Salt feels incredible with his declaration because

she is a geographic teacher who thinks that Loompaland is impossible in this globe. But, Wonka sure

if Loompaland exists. Around the visit in there, Wonka does not heart their fate that wild animals can

disturb them at any time. They can eat Oompa-Loompa whenever they want to. He also looks not to

appreciate their lives because they only consume some green caterpillars when they feel hungry. His

FINAL EXAM OF INTENSIVE READING CLASS “B” 9

sensation becomes scary when he sees them eating some green caterpillars because he dislikes it and

it tasted revolting (69).

Willy Wonka feels anxious about Freud's explanation that a individual who becomes this

neurotic has been worried and not enjoyed. The impact of this situation on him feels fear and

complaining about something bad would occur. But, if he has negative thinking, that might not

happen. It can also influence the psychological design in his character.

Willy Wonka feels anxious about Freud's explanation that a individual who becomes this

neurotic has been concerned and has not enjoyed it. This situation influences him feeling that

something bad would occur and complaining about it. But, if he has adverse thinking, that might not

happen. It can also influence his personality's psychological design.

c. Feeling Panic by Willy Wonka’s Character

When Augustus goes to the banks of the Chocolate River for lip dipping, Willy Wonka starts

panic. Wonka rebukes him so that the attitude of the fat boy is full of chocolates to prevent the river

flow. He doesn't want dirt to contaminate it. He does all he can to prevent his behaviour, but he is still

nearly ignorant (17).

Following an experiment on Hair Toffe, Willy Wonka feels panic. With it, he presents Veruca

and invites her to try it if he eats just one small, lovely crop of her hair. This receipt is not perfect

without his unconscious, because in the Testing Room he had ever attempted Oompa-Loompa. They

become bald heads because of the failure of this experiment (90).

Willy Wonka against Violet when she feels intrigued by a gum recipe with a flavor dinner

dish such as tomato soup, grilled meats, and blueberry pie. Violet takes the gum and chews it until

she feels the pleasure of gum taste that's exactly what Wonka has presented. Wonka admonishes her

not to eat it because the processing was not perfect, but she still ignores his advice (96).

When he heard complaints from Veruca, who wished to bring a squirrel in factories, Willy

Wonka feels panic. She feels like many squirrels are as smart to fix Wonka ordered peanut walnuts.

FINAL EXAM OF INTENSIVE READING CLASS “B” 10

He had advised her that he is not going to sell them, but he recommends that she is going to ignore

them (111).

Mrs. Teave feels tired by taking the lift from Wonka. After that moment, Willy Wonka tells

his guest that he asks them to keep carefully with anything in this room because he becomes panic if

his chocolate-producing equipment is to be broken. Not only that, he also warns that some of his

equipment is hazardous and they must not touch it (124).

For explanation above, relevant to what is shown by Freud's argument that panic can impact

individual character as his or her favorite item from terrible experience. He or she is going to do

anything, so what will become these favorite objects is going to be safe and not destroyed by anyone.

Willy Wonka feels panic from five children to visit his factory with the golden tickets. He warns them

to be careful from the start and don't do anything if they don't want to be unhappy about it. He wants

nothing to lose and damage his properties.

d. Willy Wonka’s Defence Mechanism

Willy Wonka competitively chooses to visit his factory the best of five kids. This will be

achieved because he has a plan that everyone knows he needs to be invited to his company with his

relatives around the factory. Willy Wonka attempts to find a way to select the person who is in future

the correct person to run Wonka's factory. This aims to decrease the pressure of reputation that can

occur in future with his plant (19-20).

Willy Wonka feels so much in love with his factory because it's a nice place from his feeling

that he can imagine producing many chocolates for all people. He wants to find someone who

manages his factory after he's died and isn't fake like his competitor's spies. He tells Charlie if he is

giving his factory free of charge. If Charlie becomes an adult in the future, he may take it as his own.

Wonka feels sure this action is right, and he thinks carefully. He knows Charlie feels like his factory

because he told Wonka he thought it was a spectacular place in the world that he still saw (150).

FINAL EXAM OF INTENSIVE READING CLASS “B” 11

Willy Wonka considers that he hates adult to be the new owner after he passed away. He

presumes many adults will not respect his advice and his direction. Besides, adults never learn that

they can manage something to be better. He intends to make Charlie the new leader in the Wonka

factory, since Charlie is supposed to be a kid and a good boy and a nice person. He hopes Charlie will

save his chocolate secret receipts (151)

Conclusion

This conclusion is intended to follow up on the results of the analysis. There are elements of

Willy Wonka's neurotic depression: anxiety, nervousness, and panic. It is due to traumatic experience

when some spies disguised to be his staff. Then, during the competition, neurotic anxiety happens

when he sees one of five children doing various things which makes them bad luck. The competition

process has become the best way for him to temporarily negotiate his anxiety.
