1.1. Overview
The PBS CBW NLS enables the user to access archived InfoCube or DSO data
through the NLS interface. When you use the PBS CBW NLS IQ, which uses
Sybase IQ Analytics Server as a Nearline storage, the data is read from the
analytics server and provided through the NLS interface.

for ADK / IQ
NearlineProviders, which are adjoined with the original InfoProviders, are used for
query access to the archive data via the NLS interface internally in the SAP
System, thus rendering the use of custom-defined VirtualProvider and
MultiProviders unnecessary. The selection of Nearline data is controlled via the
characteristics of the individual queries.
PBS CBW NLS - Display and Evaluation - 8
Query access to outsourced data is not automatic, but needs to be activated first in
the query characteristics. The query characteristics are adapted in the Query
Monitor, which can be called up in transaction RSRT (see Diagram 2). The attribute
“Read Nearline Storage As Well” must be activated in the query characteristics.
This step must be performed individually for each query.
1.3. Workbooks
When using the NLS technique it is not necessary to adapt the workbooks.
2.1. Overview
In addition to the use of the PBS CBW NLS as a nearline storage solution you can
carry out ADK-based archiving without using the nearline service. The archive data
is selected via VirtualProviders. MultiProviders which contain the respective
VirtualProviders are used for the integrated access to database and archive (see
Diagram 4).

DataStore Object
The access to archived data via queries is described below. The initial status
consists of the InfoCube respectively of the DataStore object whose assigned
queries access the data in the database (selection 1 in the diagram).
• The original InfoProvider object for the access to the database data
(selection 1)
Besides the queries on the original InfoCube or DataStore object, copies of these
queries for the other two InfoProviders have been created as well (see manual part
B: Administration, Archive Construction and Maintenance). All those queries can be
started using the Excel-based BEx Analyzer as well as through the web-based BEx
Web Applications.
PBS CBW NLS - Display and Evaluation - 12
Diagram 5 shows a typical query selection list from the BEx Analyzer. The selected
query for the MultiProvider as well as the corresponding queries for the InfoCube
and the VirtualProvider are shown in the list.
The characteristics of the three queries are identical after copying, but they can be
adapted individually in the query designer. However, modifications in all three
queries should be done the same way to avoid data inconsistency.

2.3. Workbooks
You can use the CBW tool to adapt workbooks so that they can be assigned to the
MultiProvider query instead of to the original query. This makes the simultaneous
access to the database and archive completely transparent for the user when the
workbooks are then used.
To display archived data, it is sufficient to transfer the new queries and workbooks
to the user role. In addition, it is necessary to manually extend the role or user
profile with the S_ARCHIVE authorization object with read authorization only.
